Time for some updates from this summer's adventures all over the west. Headed up north for a few weeks of exploring, as well as pursue a few different cutthroat trout species that I had never caught in their natural lands. Met us with a Travis (Native Taco) the first weekend in Lander to run Christina and Shoshone Lake trails. We met up Thursday night and headed up to near the trail head to camp for the night.

Messing around with the camera managed to capture a shooting star.

    010_zpsb3466198_9ccc006d0c0cf8da6b3beac8afe4c05610069f00.jpg

Camped on Frye lake, then headed for the Christina Lake trail.

After a great day on the trail and running all over the place trying to find a good place to camp, we ended up near where we had camped the previous night. Travis and his buddy Nick don’t mess around when it comes to firewood, we chopped and split about a half a cord of wood that night and burnt a pretty good chunk of it.

Next morning headed down the hill and to Shoshone Lake, but made a stop a Sink’s Canyon “rise” where the river cuts under ground for a ¼ mile and reemerges, loaded with GIANT bread eating trout, mostly rainbows. These guys were absolutely huge, pretty damn cool (no fishing allowed).

Then, up to Shoshone. Super fun trail, rocky as hell the entire way, coming over the ridge to see the Wind River Range before you drop down to the lake is quite a sight.

We found a cool camp site on the lake with the Winds in the backdrop, and fished for a dinner of Brook trout before hiking up the hill behind us for an incredible sunset.

Travis had to head back to CO, while I planned to spend the next few days fishing around the Jackson area before hoping to meet up with some of the Wyo TW guys to run Morrison and Goose Lake the following weekend. I headed north from Lander towards Dubois and stopped to slam a few fish at dusk on the Wind River.

I had to work during the days, but ventured out in the afternoons to check out a lot of the Snake River feeder rivers and creeks, and immediately got into my first Snake River cutts in their natural habitat. I have caught these guys in CO before, but getting them on giant foam flies in the natural setting (which was pretty damn beautiful) was a very cool experience.

After 3 days in Jackson I headed north through Teton and Yellowstone NPs to fish Slough Creek, well known for big Yellowstone Cutts. Obligatory Teton pics.

Early morning on the headwaters of the Snake.

They say there is a lot of wildlife in Yellowstone, and on my early morning commute that proved to be true. In two hours at dusk I saw a bear, a **** ton of buffalo, a few huge elk, and although I could not see them, there were a bunch of people on the side of the road looking at a pack of wolves with binoculars.

Headed up Slough and proceed to slam some big Yellowstone cutts, saw plenty of critters and signs that others had been there as well.

After a few hours, the rain moved in quickly and I head back down the trail. On the way back I was about to catch up to a group of people when I heard some crunching in the forest next to me, so I stopped for a minute and this guy popped out about 50 feet from me. I watched him digging up stumps and forage for a bit and he headed back into the shadows.

Back at the truck I headed east towards Cooke City, and up into the Beartooth range for a drive over Beartooth pass in the rain. Found a trail off the road that looked promising to camp on and made my back to a series of lakes, turns out I was on the trail that comes out of Morrison and Sawtooth Lake. Setup camp for the night after catching a few little brookies here.

The next morning I headed down off the Beartooth plateau to meet someone, anyone, but everyone had bailed . . . So I headed back up to Cooke City and made my way up to Goose Lake. Absolutely beautiful up there. The rain moved in just about as soon as I got there, so I headed back out to explore Lulu pass and a few offshoots.

The next morning the skies had cleared and I went back up Goose and got a fresh look on the area. I intended to hike up to Goose Lake to fish, but once I got there I saw a pass above that looked like it would offer a great view of the next valley and maybe hiding a lake off the backside of it, so I decided to head up and check it out. The trail was hard to follow and still had several large patches of snow on it, so I had to do a lot of off trail scrambling which was pretty fun, the rock was pretty stable and not horrible as scrambling can be under loose rock.

Finally, I headed back down off the plateau and into the Clark's Fork canyon, to where the trail head for Morrison trail is to camp for my final night out. I considered running Morrison, but decided to leave it for another trip, and just enjoy the canyon, fishing, a raging driftwood bonfire and a fine bottle of whiskey.
