my pops had a lot of sayings when I was a kid. They all still haunt me and now I laugh to think of them. He's still with us and I now know why he was so adamant about my choices.
"skip three payments and you'll know who owns the truck"...
"I can't make you do a damn thing, but you'll soon wish you had"
"you seem to hate my process, but you really like my product"
"you don't listen too well, maybe I'll write it in shit so you can smell it"...LOL

I owe my pops a lot. He never really gave me any money, but I have my own company, many rentals, paid off vehicles, and a very well funded retirement. All at age 43.

The reaction you get when service tells you the damn thing needs it’s 3rd transmission in 5k miles.

Those are some golden sayings. My late old man had a few himself. Patience. Patience. Was his favorite. And now as a grown ass man with kids - I can see why lol.

Is it the dad's or the moms sayings we remember the most? For some reason I think Dads saying always stick the most.

My dad was a lot like that, but he grew up when interest rates on loans were considered good at 8%. His advice was good in his day, but not so much today.. Today I can borrow money under 2%. Using credit unwisely is bad, using credit wisely is good.

No, I'm not paying $120,000 for any vehicle. But relative to income in 2021 paying $40,000-$50,000 for a new vehicle is very comparable to buying a new truck in the 1980's for $10,000-$12,000. You'd work about the same number of hours to pay for either and I'd argue that todays trucks are much better for the money.

The secret is to buy sensible vehicles and not ever get into a position where you're upside down. It would be sorta nice to have a high end vehicle like a Raptor or Rubicon, but a more basic F150, Tacoma, or Wrangler does everything I need.

I could have paid cash for the last few vehicles I've bought, but the money I have invested is earning more money than the bank is charging me to borrow money. Since I had a trade-in and some cash for down payments the amount borrowed was small and the loans short term. I drive them longer after they are paid off than I do while paying on the loan. Total interest paid over the life of those loans was around $1500. It's cheaper to pay the bank $1500 in interest every 10 years than pay a mechanic $120/hour plus parts for major repairs.
