Cutting and or modifying the bed is easier than getting a couple of 2x6s?

How often are we hauling dimensional lumber that this is a problem?

I always thought I was handier than the average bear, yet I'm averaging maybe 3-5 wood runs a year.

In my experience, it's more of a factor for larger loads (like 8-12 sheets). Having the flat loading surface (i.e. the 2x6s) makes loading and unloading a lot easier.

That said, the last large plywood project I had was after I sold the Taco, so it obviously wasn't a deal breaker. (I'd still much rather put 9 sheets of plywood in a Taco than a 4Runner, but like Lobster said, it's not an everyday occurrence).

As a former Decked owner...that system blows. IMO takes up way too much space for the storage space it provides, and is at an awkward height. It's too high to just toss stuff in the bed without fear that it could bounce out, but too low to just turn it into a flatbed. Also the price has gotten totally out of control for a couple slabs of plastic and some drawers.
I sold mine, got a canopy, and have never been happier. Some $40 dollar Costco storage bins and we good back there. Plus I can remove them easily if needed.

A few OE parts from fancy trucks

As you can see, it can accomadate the width. But your tonneau is the problem.

If this is an occasional need a small trailer would work.

    https://www.northerntool.com/produc...ility-trailer-kit-1060-lb-load-capacity-49804

If it's an everyday need, a bigger trailer or a bigger truck is in order.

Once upon a time I built a trailer from an old boat trailer. The box was 49" wide and 73" long with 2' high sides. So tailgate down was 8'

Left the tilt mechanism in place. I hauled an amazing amount of diverse stuff. Even fitted it with 13" wheels from a Vega which had the same 4 lug pattern.

The 2x6 is the way to go. But I couldn't use the slot towards the back since I have molle panels back there. Ended up building a collapsible platflorm.20240426_101803.jpg IMG20220624191555.jpg IMG20220624191749.jpg

My 2011 has notches for 2 by 6 boards I use ratchet straps to keep the 4X8 in. I made a wood rack that fits in the bed also, it is 49" wide and 6 feet long and is tall enough to clear the roof

Cut 4 2x4s to 57". Lay them into the slots (2 per slot, side by side). Perfect for hauling 4x8 sheets of whatever.

Woodworking is my hobby so I haul slabs, logs, dimensional, etc all the time. I just had a 4" maple slab in the bed.
