Has anyone found an easier way to replace the coolant bypass pipe on a 3rd gen tacoma? One guy claimed he removed his hood, then crawled onto his truck and removed the intake and did it. Does anyone know if that is even possible?

Just wanted to follow up. Unfortunately I think I'm starting to experience the leaky coolant bypass line. All the "signs" are there. Haven't called the dealer to have them take a look and give their opinion. Just asking, if it is, for those who have gone through this, as @Beavis5220 has said above, is the job about a 10 hour "billed" labor job to replace this ? Wondering if the dealer is the place to go for a repair like this or if I'd trust a good independent shop. Thanks for any thoughts ! (2017 Off Road AC 43,000 miles).

I recently had to do the "knock sensor" replacement which requires removal of the intake+. The "back" connector is right by the coolant bypass and is accessible by that path. You would have to climb on truck (hood attached is fine) and work sorta backwards/blind to remove the hose and bypass bolts. I'll see if I have a pic of what it looks like and post back if I find it.

I also think if you search here, there are some posts showing from top.

At first 10 hours seems like 2x but if you have to remove, replace, flush coolant, etc... I could see it being listed at dealer for 10 hours.

Thanks very much ! I'm hesitant to go the dealer route but just thinking hopefully they may be for familiar with the issue and the repair than in independent shop. I appreciate the reply. I gives me an idea once I get it looked at and an "estimate" for the repairs.

If they will replace it with just another plastic pipe, is it even worth the time and expense? The leak will just come back later.

It's a design and materials flaw

I agree. I read somewhere there's an updated replacement part, different part #, etc., but who the heck knows. I plan on/hope to monitor it for a bit and do more research before doing anything. Once leaking I wasn't sure if that part was known to totally fail and dump all the coolant or :fingerscrossed: maintain the manageable leak.

There is, not sure if its aluminum or steel, but it’s a replacement for the plastic/polymer

Thanks for all the info. I do know of one shop in the area who I'd trust and know well enough that I could actually talk to. If they sound clueless about the issue I'll take it to step #2. I honestly did not have it looked at and actually verified that the coolant tube is the issue but by crawling around the best I could and doing research things point to this. I guess I better try to get the issue verified the best I can before the next step. Thanks again !

It’s awful. Remove intake plenum and lay on engine and suffer.

OK, thank you !! I read other threads where some were pulling the tranny, etc., and wanted to get an idea before I start talking with a shop or the dealer about the repairs.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
I went the tranny route… rust free FL undercarriage and it was sat/Sunday all day in the garage. I’d estimate 15 hours and it was the first time I did one. Pain in the yazoo.

If you use a thick quilt or a thick piece of foam, it may not be so bad. Lay that over the front top of grill and engine and it’s a lot more comfortable to work on.

I’m fixing to replace my knock sensor wire harness connector in about a month, and have planned for this event.

Just for reference.....my "leak" was a very slow seep, barely enough to cause a few drips over a period of time. I follow a couple of threads on this issue and have not seen a replacement part. There is one member who has been working on one, but that's been at lease a couple years now. Since mine was replaced I've put about 30k miles on it with no more issues. If it were to happen again I would probably just ride it out until it was really leaking...not a very slow seep.

Are you removing any of the DI system to get to it?

Thanks for all your replies. Unfortunately the days of trying this type of a repair is in the sunset for me but I know there were a few different repair theories and different ways shops and y'all have completed the repairs. I'm going check with the shop I deal with who is very good and maybe just touch base with the dealer seeing I'm a repeat buyer, on my 4th Taco and see what they all have to say before I do everything. Thanks again for all your help and ideas !!!
