That's true about some things, but not all things. I expect to get 300K+ miles out of my Taco. It's not uncommon for mechanical devices to last longer than the ones built decades ago.

Some people are very paranoid about maintenance. I've tested several "manufacturers recommendations" and found them to be overly cautious. Of course there are people that can't use a mechanical device without breaking it...

I'll give you the automobile point, but when's the last time you saw a washing machine last 25 years? You're lucky to get 5 out of most of them these days.

That's because you didn't buy the right one. People are fascinated by shiny things. They buy technology to impress, instead of reliability.

I used to move a lot, and never felt it was a good idea to tote appliances with me. I've bought used Maytag washers that were twenty-five years old and have never had one fail. I always ended up selling them for what I paid. Nowadays it would be hard to sell a used washer because everyone wants new. 4K front end loaders that leak, don't wash clothes, and have circuit boards... and won't last 5 years.

It’s a concept called “planned obsolescence. It means manufacturers deliberately design and build objects designed to break and or become obsolete in short to midterm. Two main reasons, first is to ensure continuous repeat sales and replacement business. Second to manufacture things to last longer would be cost prohibitive. The parts and materials cost would be beyond what many people could afford. Thus fewer sales and less repeat purchases and longer times between purchases. Planned obsolescence especially applys to electronics.

Maybe... and maybe not. Surely manufacturing of products for the United States market are very often designed in the States and subcontracted to China for manufacture, and any oversight is done by people in the States for quality control. Ultimately, if a product is imported and accepted for sale, the responsibility for bad outcomes has to lie with those accepting the product they are going to be selling. There are great products made in China... and absolute crap. A lot of the crap is from companies trying to cut costs to keep prices down (for them) in order to increase their margins.

It doesn't necessarily mean Chinese products are crap... as much as it means that Americans aren't very demanding of quality.

Good morning and a happy Saturday. Today is Arbor Day in our city and I do have a responsibility with the planned event. Going to be nice to see some old friends, help plant a tree or two, and maybe dedicate a park bench. Tonight, we are going to a dinner dance at an Elk's Lodge and the music will be by a band that my high school class used to hire to play in a battle of the band's dances. Going to be a fun evening.

Envious! Oh does that sound like a fun time! My lady and I use to go dancing every Thursday night. A local bar/dance hall had a jitterbug night. Great fun, great exercise!

Rained all night and suppose most of today…April showers ready for May flowers! Guess I’ll mess around in my man cave or garage today. Always something enjoyable to do!
Have a wonderful day and if you have sunshine get some vitamin D! Get/stay healthy!

    Morning all:

Darn, darn, darn, just got a phone call that an old friend of mine just passed away.:(:(:(
I had mentioned him prior, he owned a 1965 FI corvette that he bought new, the last time I saw it it had just 30,000+ miles on it and is numbers matching except for the FI which he replaced with another FI unit, $$$$$$ car! If wanted, a 65 FI unit could be put back on it, they are available.
Found out that he transferred the car ownership to his daughter when he started having health problems, his daughter is a nurse and isn't needing, hopefully that car doesn't get pissed away for peanuts to one of the vultures around here, which may have happened had his wife inherited it.
I think he knew that that might happen!
    RIP Rollie!!!

For the most part yeti makes quality stuff but it’s way way over priced. And for some having a Yeti is simply a status symbol. For weekend warriors who need to keep things cool for a day or two they are a complete waste. A cheap Igloo will work just as well for a day or so. If you’re going out for a week they are superior for keeping food and beverages cold. But there are other coolers that almost exactly like a Yeti for a lot less $$$. I don’t own a Yeti but I would be one cool dude riding around with a big ol’ yeti in the back of my truck for all to see. I may just put a yeti decal on my rear window. :D

LOL... My wife and I like to spend time going to yard/garage sales, and we like thrift and antique stores. Yeti stuff isn't exactly common, but when it's there it's as cheap as anything else. And honestly... a hundred bucks for a dog bowl? That just makes me laugh. The only extra value in that price is bragging rights, and we just shake our heads and wonder about people that would spend money to brag.

Years ago, my honey bought me a Yeti for my birthday. Cheaper back then. At the time it was top cooler in the market. It has worked well for years and held up well. I wouldn’t spend for one today. Too many out there that are just as good for quite a bit less. But then I have no use for a new one since my old one works fine.
“Buy once, cry once!” as the old saying goes.

How funny, cracking up here. Joined the site about a couple of months back because I bought a 2024 Taco. Not my first, but told the Mrs, probably my last... And then I stumble on this tread. Still laughing - hello from one old timer to all other timers, no disrespect... I read this thread has been going on for approximately 11 years, wow!!! I'm impressed.
