Ive personally used Valvoline on my 03 4runner and was great.

Ive also heard lots of trucks use Mobil. You could also buy Toyota oil from Toyota dealership store. DONT BUY online, just go to Toyota store.

Don't let anyone talk you out of doing an initial 3k oil change.

I follow my e46 m3 oil change regiment ... 1200 and 5k miles after that for life of engine.

This whole 10k is Toyota meeting CAFE standards for waste oil and not engine life.

Yep, 10K oil change is literally " we will have new car in next years, you don't need to keep that one, just trade in " literally.

When I went and found out there was no oil change i was surprised. I asked them to do it, 72$ total but i was literally only one in all those dumb customers who had brain. People are so dumb now days, I am not blaming market for using them, they just want new and fancy cars, so that's what they get. Just like they get scammed with iPhones, newer ones are exactly same just different size or extra camera. Hell if apple released iPhone whatever with 1 less button people would ditch previous model and buy that.

Costco has a sale sometimes on Mobile1 0/20. Just go with that and don't over think it.
since you are asking what oil, do you plan on doing it yourself?

I just go to my dealer and buy 25 quarts at a time of Toyota branded and Mobil made 0W-20, enough for four changes and they always give me a great price because I'm buying a bunch and we're all happy. Since I'm not putting a lot of miles on I generally just change the oil once a year which works out to be in the 4-5K range.

I think to add to what you're saying, the quality of oil and oil filter do matter as well as the driving conditions.
    (no frequent super short trips)

I can also see why a lot of mechanics/technicians will KISS and stick to 5k changes though.

I personally run AmsOil Signature series with the matched 15k filter, and end up changing it out at about 7k because I hit the year mark first.

The way I generally see it, oil is cheap and that engine is not so cheap.
For me I change it once a year so overall it's not actually expensive.
I can say in peaking through the oil fill cap, the little bit of the valve train I see is spotless, for what thats worth.

I have changed the engine oil on every new vehicle I've ever owned at around 500 miles. One has no idea what is inside that crankcase when you bought it. Changing the oil after the "first full tank of gas", using a proverbial saying here, is an absolute best practice IMHO.
    ----------
The only way to tell if you have a potential anomaly, such as particles on the magnetic drain plug or in a filter cartridge, is to change the oil early. I have thankfully never discerned an anomaly (which does not make this a waste of money), but if I had one, I would darn sure rather discover it at 500 miles than 5000 miles. It would make any warranty claim that much stronger. Go on warranty claim record at 500 miles within 30-60 days there was metal in the oil. If you wait all the way until 10,000 miles, and you have a short commute to work, an entire year may have elapsed.
    --------
500 miles and every 5000 maximum thereafter for me.
    --------
Fully synthetic oil is best. This is not even debatable anymore. I refuse to waste my $$$ on WalMart or Amazon dinosaur oil that was distilled & blended in China from the sludge on the bottom of a crude oil storage tank in a refinery.

Wow. I’m surprised we got to 31 post before someone belittled another oil thread. That’s got to be record.

0w-20 only comes in synthetic. Use any brand and change it every 5000 miles by yourself. Use a OEM, Mobile1, or other high quality filter.

Toyota doesn't make oil. Or filters. It's someone else's rebranded product, the low bidder for some contracted term. Yes, this years oil may come from somewhere different than last years.

To be clear, I'm not saying either product is bad. Just that they aren't worth any premium price or effort that may be needed to obtain them.

In other shocking news, nothing branded TRD on or for these vehicles was actually developed in their racing program.

I know, I know, it's crushing to realize all those decals, small hard parts and hat pins are just marketing fluff.

First: I'm not stating the Toyota branded product is superior or inferior to any other equal specification product. Any reputable brand product that meets Toyota published specifications is acceptable to use.

It is frequently tossed out that it is "just re-branded", this is incorrect.

The Toyota branded oil is manufactured by Exxon-Mobil to Toyota specific specifications, no off the shelf product is exactly the same.
