Has anyone replaced the inner shifter boot (Toyota #33555-35040 or Dorman #926-136) that covers the spring retainer? What's the best way to go about this? I cannot find any info on this. I have a new one but I don't want to rip it forcing it over the shifter lever.

Does the fat part of the shifter arm unscrew to pull the boot off?

@Andy01DblCabTacoma the whole shift lever would have to fit through a tool like that. I'm not sure if anything like that exists. I'm surprised there isn't any info about doing this.

I'll give it a shot. I'm not optimistic though, as I've been known to tear small holes.

The illustration is a bit misleading in that the inner boot sits above the lower components. If I remember from when I had my shifter out, to get the boot on warm the boot in hot water to ensure the rubber is pliable. Then use something like rubbing alcohol or vaseline on the shifter to carefully push the boot down the shifter. That's my best guess, or at least what I would attempt.

    Best of luck to you.

I tried putting the boot in hot water as a test just to see if it became more pliable but I didn't notice a difference. @SpokeWench you installed it this way and it was able to fit over the lever without ripping?
