Was it because you hated the stock sound like I do? And those of you that switched back was it because the aftermarket big names were worse?

I don't know what to do. I really dislike the stock muffler at around 2100 RPM's.

It really sounds like it is broken inside but I just can't be sure and I can't prove it and the dealership said it is just a characteristic of Tacos.

2022 Tacoma base with only 10,600 miles on it.

I bought this thing after barely test driving it around the block and figured I would love it based on my wifes 2024 4Runner but after getting out and putting some miles on it I don't like it at all.

Drives nice and all but man I am not liking the frequency of the exhaust note.

    Appreciate any thoughts!

I bought an aftermarket exhaust because I wanted to hear it. Thats it. The stock system is bland. Better or worse is all subjective. You will not really get much gains out of an aftermarket kit on our weak V6s. It's all just for sound and smiles. Pick one you like the sound of, tons of clips on line. They will sound different in person, drone can all be a tough one to get across on video especially if you have large mud terrains. I went with a Gibson cat back system and a URD Y pipe. It was well priced, I like the sound, it's not raspy.

The problem is I DO hear it. LOL. A little too much. I am just looking for as silent as possible. I just feel like this stocker could be way better.

I need to drive a few and see if they are the same.

I don't really want to mess with aftermarket unless one of them claim to be quieter but I am not seeing that anywhere.....yet.

I am sure this has been asked in here and I have not looked yet but I can't help but wonder why they didn't just use the entire 4runner 4.0 5 speed set up in these?

It's less Tacoma and more mod
You can turn down the volume by just getting a Vibrant Ultra Quiet resonator installed in the stock exhaust system. Cheap and easy.

You'd be best going to an exhaust shop and asking if they have a way to reduce the drone.

V6's do it naturally, but a bigger resonator is likely the best path for you.

I get it, I hate the tone as well, I have no idea how people can drive with louder than stock tacoma.

You should have taken it for a better test drive. Then you would have realized you really wanted a 2nd gen Tacoma (2005-2015) with the 4.0L and 5-speed.

I changed to the carven cat back for a little extra power while towing my off-road camper in the mountains of Idaho and Utah. After about a week I cut the carven muffler out and put a magnaflow muffler on the carven pipe. The carven drone was too loud. The magnaflow gives me the same power but less obnoxious noise while sitting in the cab.

I'm going to look into this for sure!

    https://vibrantperformance.com/ultra-quiet-resonators-v1249/

I can tell it is not the sound of the 3.5.....it is the sound of the muffler for sure.

All I know is my 4.0 Jeep XJ with NO muffler is WAY more tolerable than this Taco....and I run 31" AT's on the Jeep!

Does it pop on downshifts? I had an XJ for a year or so, sold it because me and my wife kept smashing our heads on the roof getting in.

The Jeep or the taco? Neither backfire or pop at all.

The taco just gets really loud at certain points. It is hard to explain that is for sure!

And being my first pick up truck it almost like the bed with the factory cover is a acting like a megaphone sub box for the muffler! LOL.

I have a genuine yota rubber mat coming maybe that will help?

I swear in my mind this 3.5 would just be better with a thick wall pipe and NO muffler.

For frequency-dependent drone, have you considered a quarter wave resonator? Definitely more DIY than the vibrant, but should be fairly effective damping a few hundred RPM range.

I went custom (2.25"s into a 3" Walker Quiet-Flow), but that was to retain cats with equal length headers and a re-route.... and it was on a 4.0L.

I drove it quite a bit today and I think I am over it. It is what it is.

I may add that Vibrant in front of the muffler at some point though but I might not.

It sure seems like Toyota could have made a better choice but maybe this is the best they could do with the 3.5 at 2100 RPM's while having it quiet in other ranges.
