Not sure if Yankum is an approved vendor...if not, it would be a good idea to go through the process.

 

How about UV exposure? Something I probably worry more about than actually matters, but it was one of the reasons I went with the Factor 55 flat splicer. Almost completely shields the synthetic rope.

 

Yeah I wrap all the exposed rope with outdoor tape. I found one that doesn't leave sticky goo. UV does a number on most polymers!

This setup looks nice. If I ever actually used the winch I would definitely want it. The metal stuff does just fine in the shopping mall parking lot though.

 

There's pretty minimal rope exposed with this fairlead. It was certainly a consideration for me. Even if it's getting blasted by UV, it's only the extreme end of the rope. If it were to break, it would be a quick and easy repair with a FID.

You could also look into dipping the end of the rope.

I will say that as an avid sailor and long time synthetic line user in that application, I have line that has been beat silly by UV for years and still delivers under insane winch, wind and, snap loads. Will it last forever? Nope. Is it my main concern? Not even close. Off road use (mud) has me more more prone to replacement long before UV "kills" a line. Just my opinion though.

 

Another benefit of ditching the hook, it's one less item to make contact with slopes on extreme approach angles.

Yep, I carry one in my truck. I've used it a bunch of times and it works exactly as advertised.

 

Holy moly, $250? I like the idea of no hook or thimble or anything on the end, but you can easily do that without spending that kind of money on a fairlead. It's common in aus videos I watch, they usually just leave a hard shackle on the end of the winch line.

 

It certainly seems steep, but after factoring in the cost of a Factor55 hook, fairlead and thimble, it's not as bad as it looks.

 

True, if that's the alternative being compared against. Nothing wrong with spending money on quality gear, there are just less expensive ways to eliminate anything on the end of your winch line. It's not like this fairlead is the only way to make that happen, that's all I'm getting at.

 

No more than a Factor 5 Ultra Hook...to each their own though.

 

It's also worth checking out their other gear. I picked up a 30' kinetic rope and dipped shackles. High quality ropes, straight out of ID USA. Super fast shipping as well, but I'm pretty close to them.

 

What exactly did you dip the end of that line in?

Like I said if that's the alternative being compared against, sure. There's also nothing stopping anyone from just removing whatever is on the end of their winch line and hooking it to something else, like what Bert just shared. I'm just sharing my opinion, that's all. I think it's unnecessary and overpriced for the goal that's trying to be achieved.

 

I agree...but then again, almost everyting I buy I feel like is a bit "over priced" these days.
