@Tacoma13_NC no unfortuneatly this is no longer made by Yakima, and all of the baskets they made going forward sit on top of the bars....but these old style are built way better. Much stronger than the new ones, and they’re around on craigslist or enay of you look.
The hardware an be had too, i found a kit n.o.s. On ebay

search for “Yakima basketcase” and “Yakima basketcase hardware”

I have the basketcase with Yakima timberlines on the oem rack. Good setup. Here is mine without the wind fairing.

not strong enough for roof top tents etc obviously. But great low profile and useful.

Ive been thinking of getting those bars actually. How much less flex does it have than the stock bars (even though its mounted to the stock bars) Ive got some kids kayaks that I need to put on the roof this summer, but Im just not comfortible putting my J mounts on the stock roof rack with the amount of flex the bars have... nothing like having the mounting bolt for the J mounts going into the roof.

I like my factory roof bars..ski racks mounted on them..( mainly to carry fishing poles and fish gaff)..
Only thing “WIND NOISE”...I did add aftermarket wind defector..some noise is still there..

With any roof racking expect “wind noise”..

Some say, factory roof rack very limited in carry weight..hence all the aftermarket ones..
    Aloha

I’m not sure what the actual weight limit would be, but it probably wouldn’t do much more than 120 lbs.

I basically had hundreds of dollars of Yakima bars and accessories from my old SUVs, so it is was an easy and cheap add. I also like the look of normal bars and basket versus a more military/tactical look of a prinsu or something similar. But that’s personal preference...

It’s much stronger and a lot less flex than the oem cross bars. Even though they are the same bars undermeath, it feels much stronger with the Yakima bars bc the oem bars are tucked away and not extended.

My round bars are about 15 years old and are solid steel. I think the new Yakima round bars are still steel but not sure.

I have had 700lbs on my roof with Yakima round bars. Probably far exceeds what they say is safe, but i did it. I hauled a ‘27 ford model T roadster body on the roof of my car from SF Bay area all across I-40 to Oklahoma City. No issues whatsoever. Yakima racks are strong as hell

*note the roadster mentioned above wasn’t a complete car, just frame, body, and other parts in boxes inside the body.

I bought my round bar Yakima rack way back when I had a 1970 VW Beetle and needed the round bars so the rack would sit on the round roof properly.

I've stayed with the round bars all these years because I've never bent one despite some really heavy loads (lumber mostly). I've noticed plenty of pickups with bent Thule bars on them.

My old 1988 BMW 325iX was my pickup truck for awhile. old thule square bars and gutter mounts, I loaded about 400lbs of ikea furniture on the roof one time and drove it home.

That thing was a tank with that rack.

Here is the front clip I picked up, drove 300 miles with it like that.

Agreed. My concern is not with the Yakima bars. It’s that they are mounted on the oem bars.

Had the Yakima round bar set up on my Tundra before I got the Tacoma....needed different clips and towers. Used for kayaks, lumber, extension ladder, canoe, etc. Built the bed rack and after hauling the 16' treated 2x8s at camp gave the Yakima set up to my son to use on his new Ranger PU for his skiing and other outdoor adventures. Still have a set of round bars attached to my bed rack that I can still haul everything but the long lumber.IMG_20200629_122600 (1).jpg IMG_20190815_124622 (1).jpg IMG_20190716_135922 (1).jpg

Yakima round bars do rust...ran then for many years..salt water fishing ,,to carry my fishing poles
Later replace them with electric conduit tubes..same size..
I know salt environment is corrosive ,..still have my Yakima racks with the conduit pipes on my old ranger..farm use only..today..

Rhino ditch tracks allow use of thule or Yakima track mounts on cab or shell. They keep all the hardware away from the paint. They’re made for double cabs but I’ve modded mine for an ac. Works great and easily swaps for long or short length materials. I keep them stowed in the cap because leaving them on is a 2mpg hit.

Actual length is just about 58"....originally the ROOF RACK ones were 78" on my Tundra but cut them down to 58" to fit the Tacoma width. Bought the 58" set for the bedrack.
