Ok, looking for anyone that installed Yakima Roof racks in the factory mount holes. I wanted to ask how it went and suggestions.

    Here's what I understand I need:
    Yakima skyline towers
    Landing pad 24
Whatever bars I choose. Thinking round bars as they are the easiest to use.
    Round bar mount adapters.

I will silicone the holes as much as I can.

Is it better to cut holes through the rubber strip seal or cut out the section around the mount holes?

    Thank you!

Ok, does someone at least have experience working with factory bolt holes? Should I mount the mount right over the rubber strip or cut out a section?

I’ll be installing this set up on my truck tomorrow.
Yakima has pretty clear instructions on the install, surprising detailed I thought.
They can be downloaded if you do not have them.
To answer your question, you modify just the section above the factory holes then mount over the rubber strip.

Thanks for the info, please let me know how the install goes!

BTW: where did you purchase the yakima parts? The landing pads are sold out everywhere online.

    What bars are you using?

I cut as little of the rubber strip as possible. PITA but it looks better.

Yeah they are tough to find… I’m in Canada so my source will likely not help.

I think the bars are called Core Bars.

IF you follow the method in the instructions, you still have an uninterrupted rubber strip (no cutting). Instead you mark out then drill a 3/8 hole through the strip.

Install done this morning, took my time maybe two hours including stopping for breakfast.
As I said above the Yakima instructions are very good. The only thing I did differently was in the instructions it said to drill a 3/8 hole through the rubber strip. I used a heat gun on a screwdriver & pushed it through the rubber strip, easy to do, nice & clean. Pics of modified rubber strip below.

I think it looks great, I’ll take a pic when it stops raining here.
This set up isn’t exactly cheap that’s for sure! While the end result is exactly what I wanted and the fit/quality is excellent, I still feel like it’s overpriced… oh well, on to the next mod.

There’s a strip of metal that runs the length of the rubber moulding. You have to cut that out so that the Yakima Landing Pad screw can pass through.

I know you are asking about a Yakima rack, but have you checked out any of the CNC racks? Might be some downsides compared to the Yakima (weight, not quick release), but I think there are a lot of upsides too. I was going to put a Yakima rack on my topper but all the parts add up and for not much more I got a Sherpa rack. It's not quick release like a Yakima, but a whole lot more versatile. Their cab rack also has rubber mounting feet that eliminate the need to silicone the holes. Just a though.

Heat up a screwdriver or whatever metal object you want and let it melt through, that’s what I did.

The Yakima instructions are literally step by step, there is no second guessing anything throughout the whole install.
Take 5 minutes and read the instructions, no video required.
