I have been kicking around the idea of swapping out squadrons for a pair of XL as ditch lights.

Currently, have a 20" Rigid light mounted in the grill. and BD squadrons as ditch lights. Both are the driving combo pattern. The BD lights are pointed outwards a little as to mitigate glare off the hood. When everything is powered on there is a slight light gap between the bar and ditch lights. With this much light it really does not matter much.

Both the XL and Squadrons spec at 4,900 lumens, so really only see a difference in size. If I did go with XL or even the XL80 for more light what would be the advantage?

If I did this then I'd have a spare set of lights that I could perhaps recover part of the cost selling them to some Aussies here working on an off road program..... They tell me their range is only the size of Florida and takes 5 hours to cross if they can maintain 68 mph.

I asked Baja Designs this same exact question. They pointed out that because the reflector is so much larger in the XL series then you get a much better light pattern than the squadron series. They do use the same LEDs just the XL series uses the light much better than the squadron. Of course this comes with a price increase and size increase.

I went with the XL80s off this recommendation and I couldn't be happier with my purchase...in fact I bought a second set as side scene lights.

I actually think the XL80s are the perfect size for ditch lights and they are real attention getters.

I'm happy with the Squadron size on the ditch mounts, they don't scream for attention, but give out plenty of light.
I use Pro with Spot and yellow lens covers for ditch, and Sport Combo yellow for fog pockets..
