Hey guys, I am looking for some guidance over what truck I should buy..

I really got into motorcycle racing this year and quickly learned that my Honda Civic with a trailer is not the best bike hauler. I live in Commifornia so gas is insufferably expensive and you cannot drive over 55 mph while towing. That being said, I figured a Tacoma would be the best vehicle for me. The 5 lug models have lower beds than most trucks, making it easier to load and unload a sport bike, they are six feet long, and for a truck they get good mileage.

Even though Tacoma's last longer than most reliable cars, I want one with less than 100k miles and the newer the better. I do not care about making this truck fast. I have a sport bike and a '95 Mazda Rx-7. If I want to do something fast and fun, I will take those vehicles. I do care about looks. If I get a standard 4 cylinder I am going to spend money on wheels and tires and potentially lower it. I do not like the body kit on the X-Runner, but I could see it growing on me.

All things considered, I did find a 2014 X-Runner in my area for $26k, with 36k miles. What do you think, should I pull the trigger or wait for the right 4 cylinder to come along?

I might be getting old and senile but 26k sounds crazypants. What does kbb say it’s worth?

(edit, sorta tried kbb, and they didn’t have an x- package… but 6 cylinder stick rwd in ‘excellent’ condition topped out at about 25k private, so I guess I am the crazypants one)

KBB says $26k, but you are probably right. Everything is so expensive these days, which is why I have been using my civic as a tow vehicle.

X runners arent for everyone. I personally hate how they drive. Very rigid and bouncy. Along with a clunky V6 it's just not for me.

The 5 lug 4 banger 5 speed is a dream to drive, simple and very well mannered.

I'd probably suggest an add-a-leaf if you do go with either, just to keep the truck off the bump stops.

How about the 4 banger auto? I have only owned one automatic car and it drove me nuts, but I am tired of rowing gears in SoCal traffic. Maybe I am just getting old.

It's not bad, I get that, especially in your area.

The 4 speed auto in the 4x4 mode isnt my favorite, but for your 5 lug purposes I say its perfect.

Wait for a better deal. $28k would get you a new SR AC in 2020. Spending that on an x-runner, if you’re not looking to race it or use the x-runner-ness specifically, well, that’s not a good way to tie up cash, even if you’ll get a ton back if you want to sell.

I can say that the 5 lug, 4 banger is pretty gutless when heavily loaded. You learn pretty quick that stomping the gas to get you out of trouble or into position isn’t a winning strategy.

That said, once you’ve got that figured, it’s pretty chill.

That X-Runner has been on SD CL on and off for months, so it's obviously over priced, and/or there aren't many Tacoma folks wantin' X-Runners.
As for current Tacoma prices, go on over to BAT and see what's going on, esp. low mile 1/2 gen with manual trans, they are f***ing popping price-wise.
And that mindset has been trickling down EVERYWHERE, dealers, CL, etc. The 3rd/and soon to be 4th gen are plastic and disposible... sorry guys.
I've been driving 4 cyl manual trans 5 lug, 2wd sissy Tacomas for 20+ years as my daily commuter/utility vehicles, they are bomb proof. (had a few)
Are they quick with 500lbs in the bed? No, I do that, foot in it and nothing, but you will get there...and forget the automatic slushbox, even slower.

Wow you are right! I just went on Cars and Bids and was shocked at how low some of these Tacoma's have sold for compared to the local listings around me.

    X runner by a mile.

i've not done any market research on them in a while. but as with any used tacoma, i recommend opening a toyota owners account, punching in the vin to check any service records.

for price, i recommend popping the vin in to carvana etc to see what the dealer buy price is going to be.

A little overpriced (Cali tax) but it's better for your application than the x-runner
