So about 8 months ago I buy my 2011 from Dealership A and drive home happy. I go back to dealership A to do my 5000 mile maintenance, after I get back home I check my tires out of curiosity and find all 4 of my tires are inflated wrong. After finding that, I decided that for my 10K maintenance I'll go to dealership B that is closer anyway. So 10K rolls around yesterday and I take my truck to dealership B and they start work on my truck. While I'm sitting waiting the Toyota guy comes and tells me that the VIN on the registration sticker does not match the VIN on my truck and says to go DPS and get a new sticker no big deal, they probably just gave me the wrong sticker. He then asks if I had taken my truck in for the 5K maintenance. I tell him yeah I had it done at dealership A, why? He says that dealership A never claimed that they had done it in the Toyota system(Whatever I don't care just shows me that it's something else they did wrong). I didn't get a change till today to fully investigate the VIN issue. After checking my loan paper work, Toyota online payment, registration sticker and actual VIN on the truck I find out that the VIN on my truck is not in my name at all. All the paperwork I have and on Toyota's website it says I have one VIN, but my truck actually has a different VIN. Anyway tomorrow I am taking a trip to dealership A to get this all sorted out. Fun Fun...

That sucks. It almost happened to me, too.

My dealer filled out all the paperwork for a truck they were bringing in for me from another state and then found an identical one locally. When the deal was closed I signed all the papers and drove home. The next day the dealer called and said the paperwork I signed was for the out of state truck not the one I had! I'm glad their back office staff discovered the error before sending in the financing and registration paperwork even if it meant a trip back to sign new papers.

It's definitely a good idea to verify that the VIN numbers of your vehicle match the paperwork because mistakes happen and they are a lot harder to correct later.

well that's some shit right there....the dealership I bought my truck from screwed up all sorts of stuff in the paper work. Screwed up my address, city, zip...ran mine and my wife credit with the wrong names...came back to us like, "uhh have u ever had any credit, do you pay any bills?" they actually said that to us.

One would think they would realize they are missing a truck when they do a inventory check. Sounds like the truck you really own has someone eles behind the wheel

Should be interesting to see what the dealership has to say for themselves.

Same truck/wrong stock delivered to you. This would suck if you were in any sort of accident.

I did the free VIN check online on my actual VIN and the VIN on the paperwork, both say 2011 Tacoma Double Cab Prerunner. I mean if it was off by like 1 digit or something I can see it as an honest mistake but 8 digits off? Really?

Sounds like you purchased a truck and the salesman picked up the wrong set of keys. On a key tag there is only the year, make, model and color of the vehicle. I never had it happen to me but I have seen this happen before.

If this happens to be the case the dealer will redo the papers that have the vin on it and you might have to call your insurance company to tell them about the new vin. It really sounds like it, in you case I hope this is the problem.

    Good luck brother.

Some stuff. Not a lot, just some.
Interesting, if you have the wrong truck per the paper work then where is the truck you're supposed to have? And does the owner of that truck have your truck's VIN on his paperwork?

Wow. I know shit happens but damn. Is the other truck still in their inventory? I'm surprised they didn't claim yours as stolen when checking inventory.

I show up at the dealership and find the finance manager that I delt with originally. I tell him that the VIN on my paperwork is wrong. So he looks me up in the system while telling me that the salesperson is supposed to check the VIN etc. and that to fix this they have to go in front of a judge. He then calls the salesman that sold me my truck into his office. He tells him that the VIN is wrong and to go get the actual VIN off my truck. He goes and gets the VIN, when he returns the finance manager tells him that he should have checked it b4 it was sold and then walks out with my real VIN in hand. The salesman then starts to make excuses about when you put the stock number in it is supposed to pull the correct VIN into the paperwork, and in 22 years of selling cars he has never seen this happen b4. He then gets the idea to shut up and leave from my glare and silence. He comes back in a few minutes later asking for my phone number so they can call me because this wont be an easy or quick fix. I give my # and then ask for a carfax of my real VIN so that I can check it out. He goes and comes back with a print out of the specs of my truck with trim options etc. I tell him that this is not a carfax and I want an actual carfax report. So he then tells me its a new vehicle and it wont have anything on it. I tell him that I know it has at least 4 reported items on that VIN and to go print it off. He comes back again calls me "matt" and hands me the carfax. I inform him that my name is not matt and proceed to look at the paper. I tell him as I am reading that I wanted to make sure that the other guy hasn't reported an accident or something with my VIN. The carfax is clean and clear, finally some good news. The finance manager resurfaces and says that they will take care of everything. He says he has only seen this once before in 1994 with one car and it took a month and a half. Being that this is 2 vehicles that have both been registered wrong it is going to be a while before it's sorted out. So I'll be driving around with the wrong registration for who knows how long until they fix it. Lol oh well nothing else I can do now but wait. Oh and tell everyone I know to avoid Toyota of Killeen.

(Edit: fixed punctuation, lol dumb phone)

Forgot to mention that the other sales guy that sold the twin of my truck with my VIN is probly gonna get most of the blame since he initiated this fustercluck. Pardon the weird punctuation, never posted from my phone b4.

That is exactly what I thought had happened.

And for them to tell you that it could take months is bullsh*t!! If this happened the way you described it then they have to get about 4 pieces of paper. The only important papers that you need to sign are the papers that have your proper vin on it. Then they need to contact the other Tacoma owner and do the exact same thing for them as well. There is no reason that this should be more then a "one visit" ordeal.

He needs to print out and have you sign:

    Insurance Coverage Notification
    Limited Power of Attorney (2)
    Final Worksheet
    Agreement to Provide Insurance

and any warranty info you purchased
