Thinking of getting a toy hauler in the future but have no experience with towing. I have a 2007 dclb trd sport 4x4 v6, with 6” lift. Would I be able to tow the following? Thanks in advance.

Basics. Tires, painted headlighes, UHLM, baby winch in the bed, and heated mirrors :)
Absolutely not. Even with the tow package rated for 6500lbs, that 5200lb empty trailer is about as heavy as you ever really wanna haul regularly or for any significant distance. 8500lbs loaded? Fuhgeddaboudit, recklessly unsafe. Not to mention illegal, and if anything goes wrong, good luck getting insurance to cover a dime of it. The truck itself only weighs 4800ish lbs. That hitch weight alone is overweight by 100lbs, taking more weight off your steer tires. If that thing blows a tire or starts swaying, you're just along for the ride.

You don't really wanna tow any more than 80% of the tow rating. Will it physically move the load? Sure. But it'll be extremely taxing on the truck. Engine, transmission, brakes, frame, suspension, etc etc in addition to being absolutely exhausting to drive.

I towed about 5500lbs worth of car and trailer (with another 400ish in the bed) about 600 miles this past summer and can confidently say I never wanna put my truck through that again. Talking about flooring it in 4th/3rd to maintain 55mph up ANY incline. The truck pulled it like a champ, but it was a grueling 11-12 hours. And that's with a manual gearbox and not worrying about sending a torque converter into orbit.

Tacos are excellent trucks and do plenty of recreational towing very well; boats, small campers, etc. But it's not an F-250.

If you're new to towing, check out the towing bible. Lots of great info.

bwahahaha ya right. The second you put anything in the garage of that thing your light weight truck would become a squirrely mess. It would toss you all over the road. Then the fact that the dry weight of the trailer as about your max safe total trailer towing weight is also a huge red flag. You could tow it if you were traveling 30 miles on flat ground. But whats the fun in that. Thats almost 3/4 ton territory. An f-150 could do it, but fully loaded it would still blow. Your tacoma? Nope

Trailer weight plus the "toys" you'll be hauling, it is after all a toy hauler, is well beyond what the Tacoma will tow.

Oh wait I just noticed you mentioned you have a 6" lift. Never mind you're good

Lol thanks! :ballchain: Will probably sell and get something else then since my taco probably sees 20 miles a month. This is probably the best time to sell.

Loaded up, that one would be rough on a Tundra too. That is pushing 3/4 Ton territory for comfortable towing.

Sorry Bud, too much weight for your Tacoma to haul safely. I've read that one should not haul beyond 50-60% of your towing capacity. I was surprised to learn that my 2006 Tacoma towing capacity is only 5,000lbs. My 2021 Jayco Jayflight SLX 7 154 BH Baja Trailer dry weight is 2,800lbs.

So I might get a deal on this, would I be able to pull this safely with my 2007 dclb sport 4x4?

    Still gonna be too heavy.

Look at the GCVWR (Gross Combined Vehicle Weight Rating) of your truck. It will be in the neighborhood of 11,000-12,000 lbs

Now, subtract the Dry Weight of the trailer and the EMPTY weight of your truck. The resulting number will be the MAXIMUM cargo that will be shared between the truck and trailer.

Since you have modified the truck, your empty weight will be heavier than posted number. YOU should go to a CAT scale to weigh the truck.

Once you have the Max cargo shared between the truck and trailer, then you can begin working capacity numbers.
Remember, the GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) of the truck has NOT changed. Your modifications will impact the Cargo Capacity of your Truck.

So, lets make some assumptions for illustration.
    GCVWR = 11,000 lb
    UVW trailer = 3019 lb
    UVW truck = 5000 lb

CCC (Combined Cargo Capacity) = 11,000-3019-5000=2981 lbs

Now, you need to figure the cargo weight in the truck. People, gear, pets, hitch, trailer tongue weight. The cargo capacity of the truck will be the difference between the GCWR and the CAT weight. Anything above the truck capacity needs to load into the trailer.

    2 people = 400 lbs
    1 dog = 80 lb
Hitch = 350+ lb (published hitch weight is typically base on an empty trailer)
    Total 830 lb

Assume your truck GCWR is 5500 lb......empty truck is 5000 lb, leaving cargo of 500 lb.
Just the empty hitch weight and driver will put the truck into overload.

I strongly urge you to learn how to figure the capacity numbers based on GCVWR, GCWR (truck & trailer), Tongue Weight (loaded).

DON'T TRUST the trailer salesman. Weigh your truck. Understand how your modifications impact the Cargo Capacity of the truck.

Sorry Bud, too heavy. I have a 2006 Tacoma Quad Cab 2wd with the V6 Automatic. One of the hardest things I did was to research the actual towing capacity of my Tacoma which shows 5,000 lbs of towing capacity. Specs show Jayco Jayflight SLX7 154 BH dry weight is 2,800lbs. With camping equipment, food, beer, a 40 gal. water tank and a 30lb. Propane tank, it is a chore to pull on a steep grade. I have read that for safe and managable towing one should keep your trailer weight at about 60-70% of your towing capacity. I have noticed a few new small leaks where radiator cooling lines and my power steering lines are being stressed from the weight. The new 2021 2wd Tacoma's have a tow capacity of 6,700lbs, a strengthened frame, oil and tranny cooler and come with a 7 pin connector and a 6 speed tranny. In either case you would need to add a brake controller for the electric brakes on your trailer. Good luck and do your research.

You could save yourself over 325 lbs by not hauling the 40 gal. of water.

You are correct, I take enough water to accommodate for my spouse to shower. The rest of the "Liquid" I take is beer! Depends on what type of camping destination. My trailer is a true self contained unit for desert camping, solar panel, large water tank (if needed), 30 gal. propane tank.
If I camp by myself I can easily "shower" with a gallon water bottle.

This is tacomaworld. Everyone's gonna tell you that towing half your truck's towing capacity will cause it to blow up while simultaneously preaching tacomas will last forever. I tow 10,000+lbs fine, just sags. Probably wouldn't do it around the country tho since if anything goes bad, you're SOL in some random shop but...
