Thinking about having a turbo installed in my 03dcsb 3.4V6. I know a turbo generates better power gains then a SC (turbo lag isn't a concern).

If I get everything set up, with 8-10psi, proper amount if fuel, and an inter cooler. When i am driving like a regular human being do you think i might get better fuel milage from the added compression or what have you. I know this is what the turbo on many new cars is for today.

    Thanks
    Riley

Depends heavily upon what you deem to be proper fueling, as well as the size of the turbo, and the routing and things, but yeah its definitely possible to set it up so you could get better fuel mileage in some scenarios

OP you are driving an 03? My guess that means your engine was designed prior to 1995. Modern engines are built with direct fuel injection, variable valving, smaller blocks (i.e., less weight), they use 0w-20 full syn oil, etc. A bolt on turbo will add to potential power. Additional MPG is doubtful.

    Sorta.

Most modern turbos are on minuscule displacement motors and are there to compensate for that lack of displacement by producing power under heavier throttle.

The result may be MPG under normal driving. Because of the small displacement. Other factors such as gearing and engine design efficiency are heavily in play here too.

Adding boost to an existing old design engine (done right) will give more power.

If the turbo is a small (fast spool) unit so it plays in a low RPM and our driver is a hypermiler, it's possible to see some MPG bump from lower RPM shift and cruise points.

Even IF that happened, the need for premium fuel will make the cost benefit an immediate failure.

Forced induction of any type at best won't matter. If your mpg stays the same, your costs to run will still increase.

The issue is that these Tacoma trucks are aerodynically at a disadvantage in comparison to a smaller vehicle simply due to the fact that they sit higher. Any gains you get due to installing a turbo assuming you did it right, would still net you miniscule gains.

spending thousands to save pennies does not make much sense to me and if the power is there you will use it.

You're not going to get this engine to run correctly running as "lean" as a modern engine do to achieve the fuel savings.

    Basically /Thread

I mean technically you could install meth injection on your NA engine

    Sticker add more horsepower, lol

Generally speaking, once you add more horsepower, you tend to lose mpg as previously mention.

I agree with others above. Namely that you'll get more power but not more mileage. That comes from boosting a smaller engine to make the same power as a larger, heavier, but unboosted one. To get better mileage than currently you'd have to start with a smaller engine and boost that instead.

Weight is the killer of mileage and wind resistance .

As long as I keep the mileage above 12 I am happy

Asking if a turbo will increase your gas mileage is like asking if sleeping with a hooker will help your marriage.

if you have all the parts, can weld, it can reduce the cost.
