I have a 2015 bought in 2014, on my original battery and I just installed a remote start. After successfully starting this morning and letting the 15 mins lapse I get out to start my day and the truck won’t start. (I heard the engine turn over and run when I started it e first time.)

Coincidence that battery died because it’s old or did the remote start cause this?

Unless the remote start has a unusually high parasitic draw, otherwise I’d go with the old battery theory.

The oem battery being 6 yrs old pretty much answers your question.

I have a remote start in my 14. The answer is no, and yes you probably have a battery at the end of its life. However, when you use the remote start and let the timer exceed its capacity the RF emitter relay and ignition remains powered until you go physically into your car and insert the key. It doesn’t completely shut down the electronics which is what I think tapped out your system. Get a new battery, regardless, and then run a test letting the timer expire and you will see the draw. Insert key and reset the remote start relays and you will see the power draw shut off.

So even when the engine isn't running, the remote start would be pulling power from the battery? It started fine...and had a run time of 15 mins and shutoff. Then when I went to manually start the truck, it wouldn't. I thought the battery is just used to turn the motor over.

My OEM 2013 battery worked flawlessly right up till the moment it didn’t work at all. Dead cells. Got my tacos from the truck, came back, wouldn’t even click when turning ignition. Get a meter on it for sure.

kinda like tires and oil, everybody has their thing. AGM type is of excellent quality and durability but also needs a higher charge rate. I would just stick with a Walmart battery and hold onto the 5 year warranty. It will be the most cost efficient for you. Standard sealed lead acid, no maintenance battery.

Gotcha. Only reason I ask is because with my kit(12voltsolutions) if my headlights are left in the on position and I let the timer run out, the headlights don’t automatically turn off until the drivers door is opened. Maybe that could be a possibility in your case?

This is what I was talking about to see the draw on your truck after the remote start timer expires. The lights, as mentioned above, are huge. Many folks leave their DRLs on all the time or just shut off the truck with headlights on and forget when the remote start powers up. As I mentioned, my remote start won't shut off any lights, only kill the ignition. You can here the relay shut off when the key is turned and the brake pedal pushed.

Most alarms and remote starts have a draw of around 80-300 milliamps with the higher number being the alarms with a status LED.

Lights being on will greatly increase that draw. The higher the draw the quicker the battery will be depleted.

During a 6 month military deployment my dad started my truck (Ford Ranger) every couple of weeks. He never had a problem with it not starting.

I noticed that all my lights were on after the timer expired...and I left it like that for a good 20 mins

Lights on for 20 minutes on an old tired battery will definitely run it too dead to start. Lights on for 20 minutes with a good battery should be no problem.

Remote starts were invented to warm up the engine (vehicles heater) before getting into the vehicle to drive it. People in warm climates jumped onto the idea quickly to cool their vehicles interior. Remote starting a vehicle and leaving it running until the timer shuts the vehicle off and then getting into the vehicle 20 minutes later isn't what the systems were designed for. You're using it in an unintended manner and that will lead to problems, problems exactly like what you're describing.
