Worth it to buy a used 2020-2021 Tacoma for ~$40,000?

    Hi all,

I'm in the market for my very first Tacoma (TRD Sport or TRD Off Road)and I could use all your help/advice.

While I am looking at new, I'm also exploring used Tacomas, mainly because I really really really love the Cement Grey color which is now obviously discontinued.

With my search, I'm seeing a lot of 2020-2021 TRD Sport/OffRoad Tacomas with roughly 20-35k mileage at around $40k to $42k. Is worth it, or should I just buy new for about $5k-$6k more?

Where are you? New ‘23’s with a lot of options are $42k new. 40-42 used sounds high without seeing the particulars.

Buying new over used would be purchasing 20-35k miles for $0.15-0.25 per mile. In my book, any depreciation that's less than the US tax reimbursement rate (0.62) is an epic deal... if you're selling your 2021. If you're buying a 2021, that's an abysmal deal.

    I'd buy new.

I was in your shoes and loved cement but not the prices they wanted. I ended up loving Lunar Rock almost as much and found a loaded OR for a smoking deal ($41,647) and jumped on it instead.

I'm in the San Francisco Bay Area. I'm looking at fully loaded Tacos which are around $46 to $48k where I'm at. And that's MSRP with whatever extras the car was shipped with.

I was in your shoes about 2 months ago. Not sure where you're located but here in northeast Ohio I bought a 2020 TRD off-road manual for 33k. It was Toyota certified used and 50k miles. It's the quicksand color. For me, it had to be the TRD off-road and manual. That was hard to find in itself. I searched for a few weeks and the one I have popped up at what I thought was a decent price. The market and interest rates are a mess but you never know what will show up tomorrow.

    Correct.

Most, if not all new vehicles sold today are 50 state emissions.

Expand your search to Fresno and Visalia. You'll find a good deal new if you're patient.

I believe you are correct, but I thought there was still some BS to do with bringing vehicles in to CA that were bought out of state. I don't know though, I stay the hell away from that country.

I just bought new. Looking around I found a used identical to what I got advertised for the same price but it included a 100,000 mile warranty (Toyota certified), which is what I ended up with adding the platinum warranty.

The prices are high for new, but in my mind the used car market is stupid inflated, so when I compared the 2, it’s not even debatable. I’m not paying close to new for a used truck.

Factor in financing, at the end of the day your monthly payment would be like $150 less for 60 months at 5.9% (what I got and I have a long credit history and a high credit score) for the used vehicle, with no warranty.

My understanding is the car companies are keeping inventory low purposely so they can keep the prices high. With low inventory they can charge outrageous amounts and the used car market is thusly affected.

Could I change your mind if I told you I had a business idea about buying Tacomas, filling the beds with 24 oz empties, and reselling them in CA?
