i guess it all depends on what you expect to get out of it and what you are going to use it for. i have one that i use for my daily driver. i don't plan on going offroad and only make the occasional road trip. it works for me.

There's two types of people in this world. Those who got the V6 and those who should have.

It’s going to be my daily driver. I’m not doing any off roading or anything extreme. I’ve just heard mixed reviews about it and wanted to see what other people that have it think of it.

Extensively test drive both and see which one you like. Nobody on here can tell you which to get honestly

My first 3rd gen was a 4 banger and it just wasn’t for me. I regretted not getting the V6 so I traded the 4cyl for a V6 and couldn’t be happier. Wasn’t enough power for me tbh. If my BBP SR5 XP would have been a V6 I would have never traded it in.

Personally I'd get one it's a damn good little motor if the price was right

I have a 2016 2.7L and haven’t got any complaints. I only tow a small utility trailer with kayaks. 54BCA105-F41A-451B-A5DC-26A784D649BF.jpg⬆️ This picture is before the leveling/lift kit was installed.

2012 Toyota DBSB Prerunner 4 cylinder,, at 125,000 miles and never failed. Still runs like it did it was broken in. That said, you most certainly wont break any speed records and it will be a bit of a pain if you drive in elevation. Passing power is okay, but I don't know if I would ever tow anything with it. Its my daughters now and she loves it, I would expect with regular oil changes it will run for a long time. Oh, 21mpg is about the same as I am getting now with a 6cyl.

    My 2 cents.
    That’s what you say now.
How about 5 years down the road?
If you want to buy a boat, camper, trailer.
Or borrow them to do some work or r and r.
    Oh can’t, not enough truck.

IMHO If you are asking that on here then you have reservations.
Which means the first time you want to do something and you can’t then your opinion of the truck will sorely change.
    The old saying.
Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it.

I know a lot of people that this situation happened.
    Good luck...

I'd say the 2 types would be those who WANT the 4 banger, and then everyone else. OP unless you want the 4 cylinder for a specific reason, you should get the v6.

I don't see much point in the 4cyl now that you can only get it with the automatic.

I'm sure they are a reliable engine. But I expect my truck to have enough power to move and carry significant amounts of weight from time to time and be able to keep up with traffic even in mountains. I have a Honda Fit to drive when I need to save gas.

For just around town driving and minimal towing, and assuming a good price, you really have little to lose. Buy it. Drive it. In a few years if you want something else, sell or trade it. It will retain a good percentage of its value, more than any other vehicle you can buy on today's market. I had a 2008 4x4 4cyl 5spd regular cab. Cool little truck. I traded it because I wanted something bigger a few years later, but no regrets, it served me well. Buddy of mine bought an '09 the next year based on driving my '08, his was an AC but manual and with the 4cyl. He now works for me and still drives the truck, which has nearly 200K trouble free miles on it. His only complaint is that it is white! He said "I'm sick of the whiteness!" but when he looked into the cost of painting it a different color, decided he was okay with it.

The 4 banger can do all this if you ride the revs hard

    Great advice!

If the price is right, buy it, and drive it for a year or two. It will definitely hold its value.

One thing that has been alluded to several times in the thread - if taken care f, that engine may outlast you!

I max out the towing regularly, and drive through the pocono mts. I max out the payload with firewood basically every few mos, and pellets ... does fine.

I have experienced the significant power loss in high elevation of Rocky Mts, and there is no way I would own this truck if I lived above 5kft elevation. The losses are huge, but otherwise it is a great truck that will do anything within its specifications (and probably more if you're crazy enough to try).

Don't hate, my little 4 cylinder 5 speed will go anywhere your V6 will go! And the trucks never not done anything I've asked of it even on a 3 inch lift, 285s and sliders and skids!

i have a second gen 4 cylinder. Its fine for around town. It doesnt seem to like the hills on the highway around here. It does tow things very well. Just not very fast.

I strongly believe if you want fast you just have to buy a sports car. If you want a dependable daily that will run forever get a 4 cylinder! It's not fast by any means but it gets me to anywhere I want to go whenever I want to go. I got 53k on mine and just have changed the oil every 5k and rotate the tires! I work the truck all the time as well!
