Wonder what the engineer means by “driveshaft hammering”? **. Corrected: (crankshaft hammering). TY

1/ why did Toyota have to detune the motor so that it could minimized “*crankshaft hammering”?
    2) what is *crankshaft hammering in simple terms?
    3) should the *crankshafts be the same, esp for the higher end motor with 400#ft of torque
    5) does that mean no modding or flashing a chip or bigger turbos or different manifold or down pipes ?
    6) I wonder if the reverse gear won’t be so high reviving, when try to back up a hill or etc…

answerers if anyone knows them. Just seems odd

I'm curious about this too. He glosses over it like it's NBD but in reality it sounds like they had a major issue on their hands and took an easy way out just so they could offer a manual transmission.

I thought I heard him mention reworking 1 and 2 gear, but nothing on reverse. I’m looking for a truck. 4x4, long cab manual, xtra cab would be ideal. And a locking rear diff by 2 nd choice would be double cab 4x4 OR, with. A manual and locking diff

He said Crankshaft Hammering, not Driveshaft.

It's been a few days, but I thought I remember hearing him say either crankshaft or camshaft hammering, not driveshaft. I still don't know exactly what that means though.
And I had the same thought: Does that mean the engine is already at maximum performance for the drivetrain and trying to tune/increase will break something?

He says the problem was crankshaft hammering. Not driveshaft.

Crankshafts have a thrust bearing that can wear faster with a manual transmission.

Miatas had a minor problem with that for a few years on units with high miles and heavy autox / track use.

People even bypassed the clutch/start interlock to reduce usage and thrust bearing wear.

If the reference was regarding manual models maybe that's what he meant.

Never heard the term before. But engineers like to make up terms sometimes. :D

It is indeed regarding the manual models. Sheldon's explanation for why the manuals have 270hp and 310tq instead of 278 and 317 like the autos.

Not a mechanical engineer, but might it also have to do with vibrations?

    Here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Harmonic_damper

He mentioned going to differing gearing? If I understood him correctly. Too much force? Waiting for the engineers to chime in...

Probably had extra wear on some crankshaft parts due to the extra HP/TQ. Probably wise to not put aftermarket power-adders on your MT equipped 2024 otherwise you may be in for a world of hurt. Bummer!

Crankshaft movement and it hitting the thrust bearing.

Not sure the reason for the reduced power, but I am guessing when the clutch pedal is pressed, the throwout bearing pushes the pressure plate, which pushes on the flywheel, which pushes on the crankshaft - and this for some reason causes the hammering.

So the loud and proud perpetual rowers get the inadequate version. Will this finally bring them to the light side? This. This is the more interesting story here at Tacoma World.

Exactly my thoughts. I'm a fan of shifting but not at the expense of a "less than" motor. And you know there is still some sort of weak link they aren't letting on about.

In the video linked above, Andre really blew it by not asking for more information or pressing Sheldon a bit. Then again, maybe he was told not to...

It's less than 3% difference in peak HP / torque.

Granted. But if only 3% fixes the problem then it has to still be on the cusp of remaining a problem.

And if like the 3rd Gen's will have steeper diff ratio, so performance will be fine.

This does sound fishy... It is not optimal, and unappealing. I suspect that the manual will disappear from the Taco within this generation. I don't plan to go to the 4G anyway.

By the time I'm tempted by a new 4x4 I expect to have a few good full BEV options available. - Toyota, or other... Then I'll be happy to go give up the stick and 3 pedals and go directly down to 1 pedal.

This is good! I'll happily give up the manual without hesitation for the EV advantages in a 4x4 - Never having to bother with the drudgery of an automatic transmission ICE vehicle.

In one of the interviews, he states that 6MT is basically the current RC62 with some changes. Can't remember if it was TFL or Larry Chen.

In the TFL video, all the engineer says it that they had to go with a different bell housing so it isn't the MT from before. No further details than that.
