I agree with everything said here. Just wish I had a mai tai or two.

In my days of urban bike commuting, I told many drivers to fuck off when they were intentionally messing with me on my bike. I also have yelled at quite a few bikers who think the rules of the road don't apply to them. I was a very cautious and defensive biker. They give all bikers a bad name.

If you think bikers are bad though, spend a day in San Francisco and deal with the idiots on electric scooters. They're everywhere and dangerous. My family nearly got plowed into on the sidewalk exiting a restaurant when a group of 5 or 6 sped by when we were there last month. This was 3 feet from the bike lane in the road. My brother and I shouted at them to get in the damn bike lane and they laughed back. I was looking for something to throw.

I have to blame/thank you for turning me on to the Cutwater canned cocktails. The Whiskey Mule is a definite fave although it can be hard to find. The Mai Tai has proper rum and at 12% alcohol/vol is no joke. I try to keep a good supply on hand in the summer months.

The electric scooters are a menace. Not because they are bad per se, but because anyone can jump on one with zero thought to people on side walks or traffic.

That illustrates things quite nicely. A bunch of people who understand the rules of the road or al least know how to move in traffic.
Imagine the gridlock if everyone of those people were in a single occupant car.

A very long time ago, when talking about such things, my dad said to me: always remember - when riding in traffic, you might be dead right but you can still wind up dead. Messing around with cars isn't wise. Sometimes it's best to give a little more room so to not be the start of something.

The same thinking works when on the motorcycle too.

Jon, you may be right. Maybe bicyclists may not know how to properly ride in traffic. I had thought it was entitlement mentality. Maybe a bit of both?

Oh it is definitely both. We are talking about a wide range of people with varying levels of knowledge and experience. I'm not going to defend cyclists that are running stop signs and red lights or are riding multiple abreast on the roads and impeding traffic.

When I see someone riding against traffic (Bike Salmon) and crossing at odd places it's generally because they were told that is how to be safe. Sadly the opposite is true.
Sometimes the safest position is to take the lane. Especially if the shoulder is tight, full of glass and debris and whatnot. Or when turning left at a busy intersection. In that case I try to stage out as far as practicable and accelerate quickly to get out of the way of other road users.

I live in the country and the riders I see are riding safely. The only question able thing I see are the groups of "speed" riders. I have a neighbor that feels bike riders should stay off the roads or they should just be on the trail that is next to hwy 23.
I no longer ride a bike, but I do go for walks. When a car approaches I move over, the roads have no shoulder. Drivers always move over. I wave as a way of saying thank you.
It's in town where I see things that are not the same as I was taught. Then again I don't see many kids out in the summer, unlike when I was kid we were out all the time.

A group of those speed riders were heading out of Ripon on Berlin rd and I just turned out on the street to from the compost site and I almost had to stop as they went by because they took up the majority of the road. Didn’t seem to care either IMG_1013.jpg

    That's awesome!
I got to watch the Mooney caravan going past my place, but they were merely formation flying in groups of three, nothing cool like aerobatics.

Those new fenders make the 35's look a little.. small.. just saying.

    Seriously, though, they look great!
