I need to rent a 5x8 U-Haul trailer. Do I need any type of special wiring harness to connect it to my 2021 Tacoma SR5?

If you don't have the connector at the back bumper you'll need a wiring harness

If you have the towing package there will be a little door on your rear bumper with the connectors. If you have that you are good. Just rented a Uhaul 1.5 months ago with my 2022 TRD Sport.

    5x8 uses a 4-pin connector.
I’m pretty sure the 3rd gen trucks come with a round 7 and flat 4 pin.
    So you should be fine.
You will also need a 2” ball.

They will verify everything works and take pictures of the trailer hitch. This is normal.

Uhauls don't use 7 pins typically, so as long as you have the 4 pin connector you're good to go.

    I’ve not seen a 7 pin yet.
My buddy has a U-haul rental place.
All the trailers I’ve seen are surge brakes too. Which are on the auto transporters.
The 6x12 is heavy as hell if you have to load it yourself.
    Either that or I’m weak:confused:
I manage, but I do a lot of grunting in order to pick it up and place it on the ball :D

I just rented a 5x8 Uhaul for my 2022 TRDOR. Took a 4flat with no brakes. I used a 2" ball with a slight drop that I have had for years. No issues.

Different note-any idea who makes those Uhaul aluminum trailers? I have seen many makers (Wells Cargo, etc) but most do not seem as stout as the Uhaul versions.

    LS1 swap with nitros.
All of the ones I have rented have the 4 pin which plugs right into the bumper left of your license plate.

I’m guessing they have them made specifically for them with proprietary agreements, just like UPS trucks. Notice how you never see them sold used?
They are stout, but for a mid sized truck, I can’t imagine wanting to give up that much tow capacity in the trailer alone, when you can’t even get near max.
