So I’ve got a Garmin Mini2 dash cam, and the Trailhunter wireless CarPlay fights over the WiFi connection and won’t let me view the live camera or send updates. How it looks:

    1. Start the Garmin drive app and navigate to the live view for the camera. Popup asks to connect to the camera WiFi network.
    2. I say ok. CarPlay icon disappears from the main truck display. I get about 1 second of live view, then another pop up from the Toyota app (?) says it would like to communicate with the truck, but doesn’t wait for a response, just disappears.
    3. Camera view disconnects, says it can’t connect with the camera WiFi- simultaneously, CarPlay comes back on.

I don’t need to see the camera often, but it does use the same system to update the dashcam, which it can’t do because it gets interrupted.

is there any way to stop the CarPlay from overpowering the camera WiFi? (Plugging it in doesn’t work, wireless takes priority.)

Obviously not the most ideal answer, but switching to a different camera could be the easiest solution.

Most vehicles have the option to disable CarPlay in the settings.

You could use the usb cable for CarPlay

you could try using a small tablet or something similar to connect to the camera so you don't have 2 devices trying to grab the same signal.

once wifi is enabled, it will not use the cable for carplay. Always defaults to wifi.

I guess you need to find out if the Tacoma is a router or point to point only. I was under the impression it would act as a hotspot, so it should be firewalled and acting as a router.

Nope, not an option. We have several Mini2s in different vehicles- they are great cams. I won't allow a crappy toyota software environment win.

I'm not sure that's the problem, but it's an interesting question. I was under the same impression regarding the hotspot, though I haven't tried that yet. I know it has it's own cell receiver- as it's always talking back to Toyota, and to the connected app.

Ok, so after some piddling- this was the fix, and disconnected carplay long enough to do a software update and live view the cam-
Under settings/bluetooth & Devices- I had to turn off the toggle for "Use for Apple Carplay" to keep the truck from taking over the iphone wifi connection. Hitting the disconnect button did not do it- as soon as the iphone wifi switched to the garmin camera, the truck took it over again.

After I was done with the garmin, I turned it back on, and carplay immediately restarted.

I have a Garmin cam too I just turn the truck off and before the camera auto shuts down I just tell it not to and do the updates or download clips from it that way.

When you have it working correctly for a few days, documenting the Tacoma, Garmin, and iPhone settings then publishing them here would be good. Might help someone down the road.

I too went through this. I contacted Garmin, and they told me to contact Toyota. (Sure.)

My workaround is to turn Carplay off on my phone (not on the Taco scene) and download or view videos from there. It's cumbersome, but at least it works. I can still give the Garmin Mini2 voice commands.
