It was my first real snow storm today with the Taco and I was heading up to the mountains for some skiing. My wipers kept completely freezing over to where I had to get out and clear them multiple times to be able to see anything at all. I don't know if it was just a combination of the weather today (cold, snow, and wind), I have not had much other snow to deal with yet this year to compare against.

Has anyone else had an issue with excessive ice buildup on the wipers?

its a Toyota truck and that's all the modifications needed
all you can do is MAX out the defroster, other than that its normal, I had this happen I reach out the window and grab the wiper arm and let it slap down on the window as it wipes by

Had it happen all the time on different cars. Usually what helps me is to run the defrost on the windshield. Good winter windshield cleaner helps too. My dad's Subaru had heated wipers. That was nice.

Good points. I didn't have the defrost on very high. Recently had Lasik and that air blowing drys my eye out like crazy.

Try driving 18 wheelers, even worse. The best thing that works for me is keeping the windshield cold no defrost keep the heater on the floor.

My 1st gen and my 2nd gen all had the same problem, must be a Toyota thing. You would think by now they would have come up with a fix. Maybe the next gen will address this issue.

The best solution for the winter season is the ICON beam wiper blade. By design, beam blades are not affected by snow and ice buildup. The bracketless design and tension springs help keep the blade flexible and provide superior wiping performance in all weather conditions.

My 4Runner has defrost strips where the wipers sit. This should be offered as part of some sort of cold weather package.

I'm having the same issue with my truck. I'm going to replace the factory wipers which are frozen solid more than not this time of year. The Bosch blades look like good options. I used rain-x blades on my last truck with decent results as well. The beam style is the best choice.

If it gets really bad, you can stop, get out, and smack the wipers up and back down on the windshield. This gets some of the ice off, but it won't be perfect...

    all tore up already
good set of trico tech blades helped a lot. i hate metal old style blades and they are a cheap upgrade to the flexible beam style blades. note: anco contours and a series did not do well on the contour of the tacoma windshield

    a bunch of new/used parts....and some skids.
If you have factory "blue" colored water windshield wiper fluid i'd suggest you dump that stuff into a bucket and replace with low temp wiper fluid or the special "ice melt" kind.

Last year my girlfriends Vue had solid frozen windshield wiper fluid.
ended up removing the whole frozen container, thawing it in a bucket of warm water overnight, then refilling with winter washer fluid. not a big deal, just annoying really.

I haven't driven my Taco in snow yet, and still have original blades, but had good luck on other vehicles with Goodyear blades that look similar to the Icons. I also had a Subaru with the heated windshield base ... a great feature which I'd easily take instead of the JBL woofer and GoPro mount :)
