Windshield Tint Exemption In California

I been riding with a 35% tint in my front windshield for a few months now, I also have a medical tint exemption that allows it, but I was recently pulled over and the officer explained I still have to fix it. Has anyone been through this?

 

Were you issued a ticket? Ask the court clerk and/or an attorney.

You don’t need to make your glass darker to make it UV resistant.

If you want to play the game you need to expect to lose once in a while. I do IR Ceramic clear on my windshield on all my cars. I don't want to reduce my visibility out the front, especially at night. My Tacoma has factory matching tint on the drivers and passenger front windows and I know it's not legal but it's not dark enough to get in trouble unless the cop is looking for something to give me a hard time for. The BMW M3 I have is dark dark on the driver and passenger and I fully expect to get a fix it ticket at some point. When I do, I'll remove it, get the ticket dismissed and then get it put back on. Gotta pay to play.....

 

This happened to me several years ago. It's funny how many tint shops are on every corner yet any cop at any time can tell you to get rid of it and write you up a fix it ticket. I got popped for an illegal u-turn back in ~2015 and the cop also issued me a citation for my driver/passenger tint, which wasn't dark at all. I was told that aftermarket tint is not allowed, only vehicles tinted "from the factory". I have no idea if that rule is still in play or what might have changed since.

Worse yet, I got it in a city that requires you go to traffic court for any moving violation so I had to spend an entire day there just to show the judge a receipt for the tint removal.

I have a state issued window tint exemption here in Georgia that allows me to tint darker than the state allowed max tint %. I also carry the notarized form in the cars we own and have never had an issue when shown to a LEO. Good luck!

 

I gotta be honest, I have never heard of medical window tint. Sounds like an easy way to sell a piece of bogus paper to me.

Being objective, I can't think of a winning argument towards tint that isn't immediately shut down by the fact that a) driving is not a right granted to every citizen and there are large percentages of our population who medically can not/should not drive, and b) sunglasses and long sleeves exist.

 

Why not use sunglasses? There are some very good UV blocking ones out there.

Because there isn’t one. Some people claim sensitivity to UV light, but that simply means you can install a clear UV blocking film. Automotive glass is already UV blocking to some extent.

There is no legitimate medical reason to make the inside of your car darker.

 

My wife has a pretty serious genetic eye disorder that qualifies for the exemption here in Georgia. Every 4 years we have to resubmit a new request signed by her optometrist. They don't give them out just because somebody wants one.

 

Does that also come with license restrictions, out of curiosity? I know that Texas does have a "daytime only" stamp that they can issue, I've just never seen one issued.
