A week ago I picked up a chip on the drivers edge of the windshield. Spider'd over a few days to about 18"

So the search for a windshield replacement began with a call to Dealer. $1600 - $1700 is what I was quoted. Obviously, days of the $200 windshield replacements are gone but I was not willing to pay that much for a windshield that could last 1 day, 1 year, or 10 years depending on luck.

In my previous life, I was a BMW tech. Familiar with tech packed windshields. I decided I wanted quality glass and reached out to people still in the industry. Friend of mine recommended a local company who has been in the business 33 years. Called them and got quoted $5xx for aftermarket glass. I asked for Pilkington and was able to get it for ten bucks more but had to wait for the order.

3 days later, Glass came in and he was able to do a phenomenal job in 1 hour. No calibration required. Lane departure warning operates as needed. For those who want to split hairs, should it get calibrated? Toyota says yes. For me, not worth the $700 dealer was asking for calibration. Lane departure is a driving AID period. Its current "un-calibrated" performance is plenty good. The manufacturing tolerance these days are so tight, I'm confident in the windshield and the installation. If anyone in the Bay Area would is looking for a competent windshield company, look up Super Auto Glass 415-710-9922.

I cracked my windshield less than 24 hours after buying my truck. Only had 40 miles on odometer. This was early 2018 so no aftermarket windshield with the lane departure thing yet. My insurance paid for an OEM one but I didn’t recalibrate it for the same reason. 3 years later it’s still working fine.

I discovered a large crack in my windshield about two weeks ago, contacted my insurance. They said they work with Safelite or I can find my own shop. Did a little research and found Safelite is often good but not always. Asked a buddy who has been in the car world his whole life and said he's never had a problem with them. I went for it, they used the glass I was hoping they would (Pilkington EZ-Kool Ultra) and the installer did seem to do a very good job. Yes the camera is required to be calibrated, so they did that, too.

My whole bill came out to $523 but with insurance I only owed the $200 deductible.

I was just quote around $550 to replace and recalibrate the windshield on mine. A local auto glass company will be doing, they have a good reputation. I guess I’ll do it after reading this thread...good info.

Less than 24 hours after you bought it? I bet you were sick about it, I would’ve been. In the grand scheme of things I’m sure it worked out.

Call Safelite and your insurance agent.

Typically, insurance will replace the windshield without any question or hassles.

I purchase a new truck from a dealer that was over 100 miles from my home. Driving back, a semi tossed up a rock. It hit the windshield to leave a chip. I called my agent to get the truck onto the policy. In the same phone call, told the agent about the windshield.....she said, "It's covered, go to Safelite. Give them the insurance." Windshield replaced, no cost to me.

Yup I was making the 300 mile drive back home and a semi truck going the other way shot a rock up cracking it. This was my first brand new vehicle too so that one hurt. Little did I know 2 months later the garage door would scrape the front bumper and a year later a shopping cart would take a chunk of paint from the rear bumper. Sucks to suck I guess.

Mine gets replaced every spring due to Wyoming using 3/4 minus gravel for winter traction all I do is send video (perminatly mounted dash cam) of the offending trucking company busting it to my insurance company & let allstate collect the $$ if they (trucking company) bitches they (allstate) sends it to Wyoming department of transportation to levy a substantial fee..........It gets handled (paid) quickly is an understatement

Dealer installed $1600 windshield every spring it's my way of shoving it in the ass of these fucking trucking company's with the words "we don't pay for broken windshilds" painted 6" tall on the back of dumptrucks spewing rocks everywhere

    FUCK EM

No Glass coverage ? I have to agree the price to replace is stupid expensive. The lane departure doesn’t actually do anything but beep at you . Personally I wish my truck didn’t have it . My 18 accord had a more advanced lane departure and almost caused me to get into accident . It tried to correct itself and almost pulled me into another vehicle next to me .

Perfect timing...I had a rock chip the passenger side about a month ago and the crack is now wandering around in front of the passenger. I should probably replace it before my next inspection. Good to hear no one has had issue with the vision system.

I'll second Safelite. They replaced mine and have the calibration tool. Insurance covered the cost. I think I had the truck about three weeks when it happened.

My ‘20 Sport with tech pkg is on its second aftermarket $300 windshield with zero issues. No calibration required. No issues with cruise or traffic sensors. All good.

Got a PGW windshield installed two weeks ago on my 2019. Was supposedly recalibrated at the time of install by the local installer. Seemed like performance was diminished but didn't think anything of it until this past weekend when I got the "Headlight System", "Pre-Collision" and "Lane Departure" system malfunctions telling me to go back to the dealer. Brought it to the dealer, dealer says they can't calibrate it due to "poor axial gap" and recommended going back to the installer and demanding OEM glass. I've got an appointment with the installer tomorrow for them to try and recalibrate it and failing that; they are willing to go back to my insurance for approval for OEM glass.

Update: Called AAA to add glass coverage. $180/year more for $0 deductible no impact on premium. Should’ve done that before. Live and you learn.

I'm surprised it's that much - mine is like 5/month for me and wife's cars.

Actually just used it last week - had (and still have....>:|) a chip in the windshield, it's tiny - if it gets bigger or doesn't pass inspection, they'll cover a new windshield :notsure:
