so I just got a quote from a local glass company to have the windshield replaced, the lady tried to tell me that it is going to cost $400 to get a static recalibration. Because I have the lane departure sensor and high low beam sensor integrated in the windshield, that they won't do the windshield replacement unless I pay for that. When she started telling me this, I had to pull the phone away because I was expecting pure crap to come spewing from the speaker from her end. Please tell me that a windshield replacement and a so-called recalibration is not going to run me $1,000????
    And is this recalibration necessary

I've spoken to a windshield guy beforevand he said that for the 18 and up tacomas, you will need recalibration and the windshield guy also said he wouldn't even touch any car with a sensor on the windshield due to this.

Well, I called another place and just had them put a brand new windshield in for $275. No 400 two $600 static calibration needed... Seriously jerks my chain to know that there are some people in this world who will take advantage of some, and others who will fall for it

Unfortunately those are prices I see all around, I am just going to roll with my cracked windshield until it has spider web all over it or prices go down.

Had my 18 windshield replaced and didn’t need to have it recalibrated. Guy said he’s never had to recalibrate one.

How insurance companies handle glass claims seems to vary widely. Ask your insurance company. The last glass claim I had, I was told to take it wherever I wanted. We have a local glass company with a great reputation. Insurance covered it 100%.

I called, they quoted, I brought it...was that easy.
    Safelite wanted $350
One other place asked 325. I figured, if I was gonna pay for something to break again, might as well be the cheapest. They did a really nice job doing it, and we all stood around and had a good laugh at the $400-600 static recalibration the other shop wanted to charge.

They will, but what you don't know is, it is reported as a claim on your record. That is given to all the other companies. You may have a perfect driving record, but they will show you claimed 3 windshields in 5 years, and that raisies your risk. It directly happened to me while shopping around several years ago. The woman told me I had 2 comp claims and I told her I had never been in a wreck, and the promptly responded with windshield glass claims...

I will say this, all glass is not created equal. Especially true with automotive glass. This is usually one of those "you get what you pay for" situations. Add in the sensors that require calibration (per Toyota, not your glass installer) and it's usually best to let insurance take care of it if you have free/low cost glass replacement, or at least have someone who knows what they're doing take care of the repair.

I was told by the Toyota dealer who did mine that if you don’t unplug the camera system when you swap the windshield, no recalibration is necessary. FWIW.

I’m in the same boat. I was actually told by my insurance company that my rates wouldn’t increase since I have some sort of special coverage for windshield repair/replacements. I’m having mine completely replaced and recalibrated for only $50.

This is exactly what they told me. That's why I went with this company. I think if anyone is told they need a re-calibration, they should know this. Will save people a tone of $$

My wife got the back left bumper of Tesla 3 scraped by a hit and run. Car only had 2800 miles on it. We choose to get it fixed. Insurance estimated 700. It cost 2800 with calibration of the bumper sensors. Welcome to the new world. There will be a shit ton of newer car out there without the nanny do dads on undeveloped roads, abandoned due to tech costs. Sorta like driving without an airbag because it wasn't replaced....
