Anyone use the do it yourself kits?
Just got a nice little spider on mine and with winter coming I gotta do something soon!
    Pics suck sorry!
I’ll try in day light for better ones but, the dark spot is the spider chip.

It’s right in the lower center of the shield and don’t want someone uncaring rubbing leaning against it. Our local Portland glass has always done well just wanting opinions from those who have done this at home.
I really don’t want the shield replaced seen posts about crappy shields and the wife’s suby had the hatch window done we now have rust issues around it.
Thinking I want to fix it myself if I can?

I recently used the Rain-x kit on a stone chip. It worked pretty good, but I can still see the damage a little.

One of the ones I was looking at.
Permatex makes one also. Even the ones that were fixed by the pros are still visible.
    Thanks man.

If it's smaller than a quarter (including spider lines) and out of the driver view (18x18) then it's possible to repair. Most insurences cover this under comprehensive. As a former NAGA (national auto glass association) certified installer....dont waste your time...it will end up cracking again after a repair.

    Have it replaced.

I had a rock chip a couple weeks ago. Safelite couldn't even fit me in until 4 days later, same day service is a joke. Found a local run place that did it for $30, 20 minutes of my time and you can barely see the chip/crack unless you are looking for it. I got insurance to reimburse me for it.

I was contemplating a DIY kit as worst case scenario but the $30 professional fix was much better considering a kit is $10.

Rock chip repair is like $45 here. I’d rather let a pro do it.

I've used the Permatex kits for rock chips before. Turned out just as good as a professional job. Drove around on it for years and it never cracked any further on me.

Yea I’m thinking I’m gonna let someone do it. It’s like 50$ I think here. Our last insurance company used them as claims against us trying to raise rates. The wife runs the interstate a lot I avoid it. This is what I get for being in a rush. Dang it 160k and 2 repairs to the shield. Don’t want to replace it now.

Are the windshields encapsulated on 2nd gens?

Is the trim that goes around the outside of the glass part of the glass itself.
As opposed to having the glass installed and then installing the trim.

I suspect trim goes on after. Only because I think my trim was put on backwards. Looked different after replacement.

Stuff is like 10 bucks and no one scratches cuts or anything.
    :annoyed:
Maybe I’ll try it any advice?
It’s in the 30’s/40’s here but I can get it inside at work.

Interesting. back in the mid 90's when I got out of the automotive glass industry, encapsulated glass was just coming onto the scene. It was a nitemare to install and remove but cut down on leaks from the factory by over 40%.

Just wondered if they went back to non encapsulated glass.

If these are not glued in and just a gasket like in the old days I’d feel better about it being replaced. I can remember swapping rear windows pretty easily.

Air temperture is too cold at that range. Just follow the directions and take your time. The key is to get as much of the air as you can out of the crack before applying the adhesive. Then apply it slowly avoiding any air bubbles.

It's really not difficult. I did it to my wife's car in an auto parts store parking lot in Wyoming when we were traveling cross country. This was in April and I think the air temperture was right in the bottom range of what the instructions recommend for the min temp.Anyways it held up for years after that. You can do it aslong as it's not too cold.

A few weeks after buying my truck, a dump truck tossed a rock into my windshield. Hit passenger side. My insurance covered repair no cost to me. It never got worse after being filled.

Yea I’ve had 2 done on mine never got worse. The wife’s is about about max must be like 12. This is about the worst besides just cracking. The cracks are what worry me. I will avoid my defrost until I can do something with it.

Have you checked with your auto insc? Some states have laws that require the insc company to cover the cost of replacing/repairing rock chips. That's how it was in WA State when I lived there.
