Does anyone know if the black molding around the windshield is removable without having to remove the windshield? I was just looking at putting a new one on but didn't know if it was installed when the windshield goes in or after the fact.

Yes it is. The windshield is glued in and then the trim is installed separately.

Do you know if it snaps in a groove or if it is glued in?

I'm also wondering the same thing. The black molding on mine is cracking and fading from sitting in the sun for 20 years. Anyone have a part number?

Yes, it can be changed separately. It seems to snap in a groove around the windshield

part number for the black molding is :

    75531-04010 (cold climate spec)
    75531-04020 (without cold climate spec)

What's a cold climate spec? The truck was purchased in Fremont, CA (same place it was manufactured at NUMMI). Been here all its life.

I have the cold climate spec, it includes a channel for water around the edge of the windshield (little less sleek looking), a more powerful starter for cold weather, a thicker cover for the washer fluid bottle, and in super cold climates you can get a block heater too.

yep, exactly. Stuff specific to cold climate areas

If the truck never left california, I highly doubt you have the cold climate spec

I actually install windshields for a living, if you can get the old molding out without removing the glass or breaking it let me know how. Generally when I install the windshield in a first gen Tacoma I put the molding on the glass and use tape to hold it in place until the glass is set into the urethane which holds it in. Once the glass is in place the urethane should contact the glass and molding to hold it in place once the urethane sets up. Even if you manage to get the old molding out without breaking your windshield, you'll probably never get the new one to push in the space between the glass and body of the truck and look right.

I watched this video a long time ago and remembered it now that I need a windshield (cracked all the way across on my first gen). Figured I'll leave it to a pro. I just wanted to have some good advice of what to ask anyone who's giving good deals in my area.

Not an endorsement by any means but Safelite is seen all around where I live and they'll come to you and do the install while you're at work or whatever. My windshield was replaced before I received the truck and it is made by Pilkington.

Apart from the install quality, I'd make sure they use an OEM spec windshield. Seems the two most common 'OEM' aftermarket windshields I notice are PPG and Pilkington.

Anything but the actual Toyota windshield will be inferior in protection and resistance to cracking, my Pilkington has tons of little chips. But really they cost too much for it to be worth it for trucks so old.

Toyota actually uses windshields made by Pilkington and various other companies. Auto manufacturers don't make their own glass, they just put their logo on it. Look at a newer Camry and below the Toyota logo it actually says Pilkington

I actually replaced my windshield last month and I used a Pilkington brand. The company I work for primarily uses Pilkington and pgw (ppg). They seem to be the best quality out there. The main thing when getting your windshield replaced is to find a company that offers a lifetime warranty, and has good reviews. The company I work for is only in Kentucky. I'm not sure what companies are are the Area that you live in, but from my experience the safelite guys are undertrained. They don't pay them well or seem to care about quality.

This was the factory logo on a 2013 highlander windshield I replaced this morning.
