I have one of these. I agree that their rope is too short for most uses, including the use that the OP wants however I have used mine a couple of times to pull a non-running VW Dune Buggy onto my trailer. The Dune Buggy weighs 1,500 LBS and the Warn Winch pulled it up with no problems, although I'm not sure the Inverter in our Tacoma's have enough output to power it; each time I've used mine I've either powered it off of a generator or ran an extension cord out to it.

It's one of those things that I often forget that I have, but the few times I've needed it I've been glad that I did.

Warn makes a 1000# portable winch powered by a cordless drill. Run a chain between your forward D bed rings to attach hook or pulley. If winch line too short remove the line and use a longer rope wrapped 2-3 times around winch spool and apply pressure to pull the load into truck with ramp.

    Well, I done did it...

I mounted a winch in the truck bed.
Still need to route the wires, and do a little fine tuning.

Here's the video the wife took on my 2nd test run.
Tried a few more off camera and it gets easier.

I thought I would share what I did. Keep in mind though that this would be for light duty use only. In my case, I used it to winch up a non-running snowblower into the bed.

No drilling. Took all of 5 minutes to mount.

Get one of these or another cheap portable winch. I would simply make a bridle (chain/rope/or strap running between 2 of the tie down rail things slid up near the cab) ... tether the portable winch to that chain/rope/strap, and you're in business....no drilling holes or permanently mounting anything.

and yes, those little plastic hooks are plenty strong for this.

Forgot to update mine into this thread. I have since swapped the winch to the bottom of the bars so it fits under my tonnaeu cover. Still need to wire up a plug in the bed, right now its runs on my trolling motor battery.

Mounting is these bed rail mounts, there are 4 of them, 2 on the side rails and 2 on the header rail

Block and tackle will suffice for doing it- an electric winch is overkill. We just tied in good webbing across the two tie points in the front of the bed and attached a pulley to it on a carabiner in the center to pull large decorative rocks weighing a couple hundred pounds each up a ramp and into the bed. I also have two Greenland II’s that I use the same system to pull them in after they’re rolled up.

This weekend i got to use my contraption for the 1st time since surgery.
    worked great.
Pulled the fully loaded kayak straight from the water to the bed of the truck. Made for easy unloading of the kayak as well.
