That ship sailed long ago when no one wanted the last ones. It's because 0-60 was 2 cigarettes and a cup of coffee.

There's a company that takes diesels out of low mileage, junked trucks in Australia and ships them here to do a direct swap into the Tacoma and even makes sure there are no codes or anything. They also do it without the DEF system that has caused reliability issues in modern US diesels.

But directly from Toyota? Not likely. Too much R&D needed to justify making it compliant with the EPA regulations and thus they just wouldn't make enough money on them. Even GM discontinued the diesel for the Colorado/Canyon.

I'd rather have a diesel over anything with a plug, as bad as DEF systems can be. Yesterday I topped off the DEF tank onnthe truck I was using at work. By the time I parked at the end of the day the tank empty and check engine light is on. I don't know how Hino trucks are today but years ago they had turbo and other engine issues, according to the internet. I think I have only driven two different Hinos and that was years ago.

Yep drove a current-gen Prado (same frame and body as a GX460) in Costa Rica with a 1KD. Lots of whistling but not much movement. That engine would mechanically drop right into a Taco and mate up with an A750 automatic.

modern diesel emissions equipment suck (at least here in Ca) I would have loved to do a delete but it would have been a pain in the ass to get it smogged here in Cali.

I traded in my Colorado Diesel due to getting tired of having to diagnose and replace various emissions sensors and things that would throw my truck into limp mode every other week. :frusty:
maybe Toyota would implement it better, but due to modern strict emissions requirements the diesel golden years are gone I think.

Remains to be seen I bought the tires and wheels the rest came along
So When i go off the grid Electric Vehicles need to be completely self contained self charging via solar power .

    Wireless power transmission another option??

Dragging the diesel generator along to me seems to defeat the purpose of the electric vehicle concept

An EV is actually a diesel if you're towing the generator into the wild

More like a plug in hybrid, but only if you're charging it while towing the genny :p

That's too bad. I have a 2016 Colorado diesel. In 137,000 miles only thing replaced on it is. Tires, brakes, oil, filters, torque converter under warranty at 50k (new one was an up grade from what came out) and at 134k I had to replace a oxygen sensor.
Love driving the truck. Great fuel mileage and no complaints on power or shifting.

Yeah it was an awesome truck, I really wanted to love it.
I used to think it was dogshit slow, but now after driving my Tacoma, that thing was a rocket.
Unfortunately my transmission crapped out on me and that was my que to quit putting money into the truck. bummer

Would have been a good idea 20 years ago when diesel fuel was 1/2 the price of gas and diesel trucks got better fuel mileage. With the cost of fuel, the additional cost of the diesel engine, having to buy DEF, and much higher maintenance costs a diesel just doesn't make sense anymore.

Our county stopped buying diesel trucks for maintenance crews, school buses, and ambulances several years ago and replaced them with gas engines. The costs to buy and operate were much cheaper with gas.

DEF (Diesel Exhaust Fluid) and DPF (Diesel Partical Filter) have ruined diesels. I just traded in my 2019 Ecodiesel because I no longer drive as many miles as I used to, DEF has a limited shelf life before it expires and will throw codes and put you into limp mode which limits you to 5 MPH. First you will get a count down from I think it is 150 miles and once you reach 150 miles that is when you go into limp mode and can only travel 5 MPH, when you stop at that point and shut the engine off it will not start again and you will have to get towed to the dealer where they will charge up to several thousand dollars and trust me most dealers do not have competent diesel mechanics on their staff. They just start changing parts until the problem goes away.

My ecodiesel ran great and I had a Green Diesel Engineering EPA compliant tune in it. Their tunes are very good. I will never again own a diesel because I just do not drive one enough to avoid the DEF and DPF issues that come up when they are not driven and used enough.

I will share this, I used only Peak DEF Platinum and did not have any issues with DEF crystalizing on the DEF injector or the opening to the DEF chamber.

LOL, do you know how many days it would take to recharge a battery of an electric vehicle with a 110 generator? Trust me you won't be a happy camper.

If it wasn’t for GM’s pathetic attempt at bringing diesels to the masses with their converted 5.7L junk engine we might have actually had better shot at diesels here.

From about 20% charge to 80% charge it takes a little over 14 hours on 110v for our Nissan Leaf. But that is with a 40 KWh sized traction battery.
