Will rubbing hurt my truck or tires?

So after a 7 month wait, I finally got my new suspension: coilovers, UCAs, rear shocks and new leafs. I previously had a leveling/spacer lift, however I've got LCA skid plates, which add some width to them, and the inside of my tires would rub them. When the shop aligned my tires, the set them a bit further back (caster?) in the wheel well in order to clear the skids and where I had previously rubbed a little, now it's rubbing even when I turn, under no load (285/70 R17).

So I know that I've got a long road ahead of me, I don't have CMC or anything else yet. My question is, will the rubbing cause damage to the truck or tires if I go wheeling? Is it just aesthetic that folks don't like rubbing? I would like to not have to wait until I've worked everything out to try out my new toys.

Yes rubbing can definitely hurt the tires. I messed up my first set of STMaxx because they rubbed hard and caused chunks to tear off the tread, this was while off-roading where I was really pushing the limits of the rubbing.

Well, hell, that's what I thought. I was hoping everyone would say "No problems!". I guess I have to go do the right thing then, thanks for the info!

I mean it really depends on how bad you're rubbing, but if you plan on flexing the truck out on the trail then you will definitely be making it rub worse than it is on the street. That's where the real problems will come up

Not an expert here, but I would assume it would depend on where it’s rubbing. Clearly rubbing isnt ideal but the effects can range from having zero effect to tearing quarter panels off and ripping chunks of tread.

On my 2002, I ran tires that rubbed at full lock for about a decade and never once had any issues other than the sound. If i were to go back in time, I’d probably modify the plastic fender well cover.

then again some people have tires that rub on the pinch weld and experience gouging. If you want more specific answers you’ll have better luck with posting photos and video of the area.

I missed that part and was wondering how he was rubbing his IFS skid plate, figured it must be a 3rd gen thing lol

Yeah I don't really get the point of LCA skids tbh esp if they make rubbing worse

LCAs are just metal and can take a beating, I don't see skids really protecting anything there

Yeah, I think it was a case of too much money and not enough sense. I'm a total noob at off-roading and figured I needed as much help as possible. I've put a few cosmetic dents in the truck already, solidifying the evidence of lack of skills. I guess ditching the skids and getting it re-aligned is the first step.

Thanks for being here! I appreciate the trolling effort but I'm looking for solutions, obviously things aren't correct at the moment.

Search for cab mount relocation or cab mountchop (cmc). There’s a ton of info here, you’re definitely not the first person to go through this. Alternatively you could go down a size in tire diameter or width. Good luck man, and congratulations on the new suspension! Im sure you’ll be enjoying it soon.

Thanks! I've been bottoming out and vibrating/bouncing around so long, I'm excited to see what it's going to be like once I get back out on the trails.
