Hey all, I'm taking my 06' down withi the next week for the frame inspection and was curious if you guys thought it'll pass or not. It looks good to me for the most part, but there is at least one spot where it is at least partially rusted through the frame. I'm in San Diego now, but the truck was originally bought and driven half its life on the east coast. I am aware that many of you have it way worse, so I'm defiantly not saying this is the worst. Thanks for any input.

go up and down the frame with a ball peen hammer. If the hammer goes through the frame anywhere, thats bad.

Dropped it off this morning, they didn't seem like they had any plans of failing it even before they looked at it, so we'll see what happens. Also, they said if it passes, then they don't do anything, but I thought they were supposed to spray it down with more rust preventative. Is there anywhere it says they have to or do they have discretion?

Maybe they're not used to dealing with it there, but they're supposed to apply the CRC coating if it passes.

The good news is, that if they do fail it, being in San Diego, you shouldn't have a long line to wait behind.

Took it in today and they called less than 2 hours later. They said it passed and that they've never even heard of the CRC coating they're supposed to. Stupid because everyone on here seems to at least get their frame cleaned and coated. I have a feeling is because I'm in San Diego and they probably haven't had to inspect that many frames, much less replace them.

That seems wrong. How can it pass if there are rust holes? Try another dealer edit: which dealer did you go to?

A portion of the original recall letter:

Any authorized participating Toyota dealership located in the cold climate states will inspect the condition of your vehicles frame. Based on the results of Toyota's inspection, If significant rust perforation is not found. Toyota will apply CRC to key areas of your vehicles frame at no charge to you..

Maybe the issue is that they are not a participating dealer, therefore don't know the process, or Toyota's pass/fail criteria.

I would be willing to bet there is probably one dealer in the area that is authorized to do these based on similar situations to yours.

This number is listed under contact info on their recall site:
    Toyota Customer Experience Center
    1-800-331-4331

I went to Toyota El Cajon. Figured they're the biggest around so they would be best. Technically it's not completely rusted through you can see in the pic that it is double walled, and only one wall (that I can see) is rusted through.

That's pretty disappointing for Toyota of El Cajon. I've always had positive results from them when I need parts or service. I would press the issue with them or get another inspection somewhere else. The laminated sheet metal design is part of the reason the frames appear to rust from the inside out.

You think they'd let me get it checked elsewhere? I figured they would have 'marked' it somehow in their system as inspected. That's exactly what I thought, if it generally rusts from the inside out, and I can see it on the outside, it should be rusted through. I want to poke around and check it out but am afraid they won't cover it then.

The rust hole in the frame by the catalytic converter, probe it with a screwdriver to see if it goes all the way thru. If it's perforated, I believe you have a case. It's Toyota's fault for the frames being this way in the first place...

If it were me and my truck I'd try another dealer, and then press it with Toyota Corp.

There arent any holes in that frame. OP's first and last pic (which are the same) is just a flake of the coating, it would chip right off and the rest of the frame is fine. that looks like a darn good frame compared to the ones that get replaced.

Flake on the coating, or rusting from the inside out? I think OP should take a ballpein hammer and bang on that rust a few times. Watch it go thru, then OP has a case. I've seen it before.

I do agree that there are far worse cases and pics floating around here, but that area next to the catalytic converter is prime suspect in my book.

I know its an old post but here goes nothing

    I'm looking at buying a 2004 Tacoma SR5 Double Cab, 3.4 V6, Auto, 4x4

At first glance the frame had surface rust so I had it inspected at a Toyota dealership. They replied saying:

"Although there definitely was some rust on the frame - there were no perforations. We hammered away but nothing actually went through the frame. This frame may just be a good one that won't actually rust through."

They said if I do purchase it, to feel free to bring it in at any time to re-inspect the frame. They said in the future if it rusts to the point they can puncture it, they might be able to convince Toyota to replace the frame free of charge.

Is this worth the gamble? Too much of a risk? The guy was asking for $15000. I was thinking more around 12. I live in Vancouver, BC by the way.

    Here are some pictures

    Thanks in advance!
