I have a 2017 Tacoma double cab with a 5 ft bed. I was looking for something like a rhino rack t-loader with a roof rack. But I’m curious if a Yakima overhaul would be spread out enough for safely transporting my big old canoe.

Anybody that can pout me in the right direction help would be greatly appreciated. Having a hard time finding hitch mounted supports at the moment. And I’ve also read on some other threads you are better off trying to mount it all in the bed because your box and cab moving differently.

I believe it will work fine - however, what does the canoe manufacturer specify for bar spread when hauling? I use the Overhaul on my 2017 DCSB for my 68 lb, 12 ft Hobie Compass and this is nowhere near the Overhaul's weight limits, and I have ~36" bar spread as Hobie recommends at least 32". The Overhaul I picked up used also has the SideBars, which seems to give it even more stability.

Thank you very much. I don’t have a recommended bar space on my canoe. Bought it second hand. Originally I was under the impression I would need a t-loader or some sort of hitch mounted support and a roof rack. But some of the reviews I read people recommend having everything attached to the bed because the cab and box move separately. Aslong as I have enough space in between my bars and I’m legal I think I will go ahead and make the purchase. I might wait on a few more responses first. Thanks for your help. Also do you have a 5ft bed aswell?

@little_joe is there a kayak rack under there, or just pads and straps?

40294209-69DC-484F-9EFC-684BD5241FD1.jpg This is my 17’ canoe on a short bed. The camera angle is a little deceiving and there is 3-4’ hanging off the front load bar and about 6’ off the hitch mounted T bar. Very solid and three load bars will easily handle your 13.5’ boat

Thanks for the reply! Have you been pulled over? I was informed by a person at a truck accessories store that you can only have 36” hanging over your roof. Not sure if that is just an illinois law or common across the country.

I have Dakine 34" pads and always carry the kayak in that position; the 2 straps; bow and stern lines. No other rack, bars, saddles, etc.

Mine regularly holds a 14’ and 12’ kayak. On occasion I’ll throw a 14’ canoe up there and it seems to work just fine! Apologies for not having a photo of the canoe on the rack.

What type of roof rack is that? Love the color match.

Yep. UpTop Alpha to be exact. They paint match for an additional cost.

It’s a perfect setup for my 17’ kayak. A canoe should be no problem.

Is that a retractable bed cover? Does it work well with your Yakima setup? I currently have a rollup with my KB Voodoo high rise bars, but have been looking at these bars more recently. Would need to work with a bed cover, of course.

Yessir! It’s a Retrax Pro XR. Works awesome with the overhaul hd setup. My only gripe with it is that the canister the cover rolls into takes a little bit of space away from my already small bed.

Awesome! And yeah, the canister with the retractable covers has been the only thing keeping me from them at this point. The short bed is small enough as is.

Yeah at times I could use the room, but for the most part I think the lockable security the cover provides outweighs the space it takes up. I’m contemplating moving to a camper shell in the future though.
