Now that the 4th gen has been revealed with the 4-cylinder hybrid and no way to get any larger displacement, will this make previous generations more desirable in the near future? Especially the 2nd gen 1GR-FE 4.0 V6. Would this be the time to buy a older generation before they go up in value or should you not worry about it.

Personally I believe they will be shooting up in price, nothing beats a dinosaur n/a V6 durability. Let me know what you think.

Car pricing lunacy during the pandemic made people think that the 20 year old rust bucket in their driveway is a priceless collector’s item.

These are old vehicles with known engine and transmission issues and like all Toyotas rust faster than the competition.

Maybe some unusual and rare models will hang onto value, but these things will just drop like a rock because they’re not getting any newer and Toyota has a very nasty habit of driving up parts prices on older generations of vehicles.

That’s doesn’t mean there won’t be a retard on bring a trailer that will pay $40,000 for a 2006. Based on the kind of cars that sell on that website for ungodly amounts of money, it has to be some type of money laundering scheme.

Also the 4L is a dog of an engine in its more powerful version in the 5th generation 4runner, the versions in the FJ cruiser, Tacoma, and 4th generation 4runner are not particularly known for staggering acceleration or economy.

I highly doubt it. It’s not like the 1st gen whose value increased simply because most of them fell apart. Perhaps lower mileage examples out there will fetch higher prices but everything else, nah.

oh yeah. My leaking TOB, trans where engineers forgot to loctite reverse, inefficient weak slow motor, paint fading more every day
and plethora of features like seatbelt and steering wheel, 0-60 sometimes, less HP than an Accord

it’s gonna be worth a million

i doubt it but i'm never selling mine. they're going to make aftermarket upgrades on this platform for decades.

might pick up a pair of those neat-o air shock seats though :D

    Mine won’t gain any value.
I’m going to continue to use my until all the “value” is gone. My truck is an 07’ w/170k on it. It isn’t worth $13k.

I'll still take the reliability of the 4.0 over any of the smaller displacement turbocharged engines.
To me longevity and reliability win over higher horsepower and torque any day. But, that's because I'll keep my Tacoma for longer than most vehicle buyers. Hence, longevity and reliability is tops for me.

Will this add purchase value? Maybe to a small percentage of people. But, overall l don't see it happening. Unless the supply of new vehicles is hampered again, then it will affect all vehicles purchase price.

“turbo less reliable” is brainlet meme. IMG_3311.jpg

Oil and coolant goes in. Exhaust gas spins it. Done.

N/A alternatives are always worse, bigger, more expensive, shittier, less upgradeable. Worse power and efficiency including altitude for those who live and go everywhere but shithole 0ft CA.

owned a turbo motor. Bulletproof. High miles. To replace the turbo would probably be $300 or less if it failed and easy to get to. Which it wasn’t going to.

turbo ownership is simple. Change on the oil on time. Use high quality oil. And warm the engine up before you beat on it. Cool it down before you park it. Which is supposed to be done anyway regardless of drivetrain.

the upgradability on that turbo vehicle is exactly what made it fun and able to keep up to improving modern standards while keeping past goodies.

options like tune, better injectors, HFC, etc

Toyota turbodiesel D4D has a turbo.
Nobody got turbo 2nd gen because it was never offered.
The options brought to the US were either POS 4.0 or POS 2.7 both N/A and likely weak bare minimum strength construction to ever add a turbo.

Inflation is driving everything up, including all 2nd Gen Tacoma's that aren't rust buckets. Perhaps those as well...

Neither of those two engines were weak.
They were actually over built and under powered. Sure the early 4.0 suffered HG issues. But Toyota themselves offered the a supercharger for the 4.0. And you still had the factory warranty.

If anything. The 2.7 and 4.0 are weak on power, but not strength.

Nope. The future is small displacement + forced induction. (and Hydrogen and Electric Hybrid)

Hard to predict, but I don't think they are necessarily going to spike, but rather continue to hold their value because the new ones and the 3rd gen ones (also holding their value very well) are so expensive.

I can tell you that I purchased my 2014 in July of '21 (104k mi) and paid the average value listed for it in Kelly Blue Book, Edmunds and whatever my credit union uses. It has held that price to within a few hundred dollars since. I can sell it today for what I paid for it according to those references, maybe a little more as I have done all the major services on it (transmission, diffs and xfer case fluids, coolant flush and spark plugs) and so now know/have the maintenance baseline if I ever need to or decide to sell it. It is in excellent condition, has a rust-free inspected (twice by Toyota) frame and no rust anywhere else. I'm only putting about 12,000 miles per year on it so that helps. It had a good service history according to Carfax and The Toyota's Owners website.

Yeah, at the peak of the pandemic insanity, 2014's like mine with low mileage were fetching the same as I paid new. Was bonkers. Things have calmed down now but are still a bit silly. I don't think we'll see a surge on 2nd Gens with the 4th Gens out now... but they should continue to hold well.

I think they will slowly creep up, at least good condition ones that are well maintained even with higher mileage. Definitely have a place for Toyota enthusiasts, and they are out there. If you watch bringatrailer.com you will see lots of 1st gen and 2nd gen cream puffs go for a decent price.

The 1G was a little different. So many of those were taken and crushed by Toyota that it impacts the value a tad.

Oh-boy: Do I wish I could get my hands on a Tacoma with the D4D engine. I have a buddy with a vintage F150 diesel and it's the only other truck that would absolutely shut him up and silence the "chirp-chirp-chirp" I have to listen to about it...... All-Day-Long: whenever we get together and he sees my Tacoma in the driveway. He has some ridiculous amount of miles on it and it's not one of the ones that blew up on Ford so they sued the supplier. He keeps it mint too.

The 2nd gen is probably the most reliable Tacoma that Toyota made, IMHO. It won't increase in value until most of them rot away like the 1st gens did, however, it's a much more practical truck than any of the 1st gens were.
