My buddy told me about this but I've never been.
What are the trails like? I have a friend with a stock jeep cherokee who mentioned this might be a beginner friendly (he's on street tires) that might be easier than something like Rattlesnake /Burns canyon for an intro run.

I went for the first time last weekend with three of my neighbors. Trails were pretty easy, I bottomed out (likely on my tow hitch) a few times. I'm a stock Sr5 4x4 on 265/75/16's. There is one trail that you do NOT want to attempt, cannot recall the name but it is clearly labeled as a black diamond and someone has painted on a rock at the start "Turn Back", which was good advice. My buddy got stuck in his new Bronco on 33's, and our other buddy with a beast of a Land Cruiser on 35's had to tow him out (uphill back to the start as there was no way that Bronco would make it down). The Land Cruiser did make it down, but even my buddy, who is very experienced, was a bit nervous.

So, if you stay away from that specific trail, it's a fun time. Not a ton of trails/space, you can probably cover every trail in less than 2 hours but it is a fun time. Bring $5 cash, there is a honor system drop box at the beginning.

Thanks for the update, I watched a few videos after posting to try and figure it out. Looks like I will avoid any black diamonds because that would not be fun! lol

The black diamond one appears to be called "Bloody Jersey" but there may be another as well. Per the other poster, I also checked youtube for more info.

I hope there is stuff near SD like Black Bear Pass in CO

-most fun I've ever had in a vehicle
-makes sports cars and sportbikes feel boring
    -almost flipped it on myself
    -banged up the underside
-realized the truck needed more mods and more lift to do stuff like that
-many people look at you like you're dumb and crazy for doing that
    -great views
-thought I was gonna die and not make it down the trail

I want to take friends there to show them but it's a 14hr drive and screw that...

I haven't been out to Black Bear Pass so have no idea what that is like and I haven't extensively checked out what's available down south in SD... but, based on your description... don't get your hopes up. Most of SoCal is more fire roads, desert, dune, baja type stuff rather than technical terrain. Not saying it doesn't exist, just saying it's not prevalent.

I'm guessing it has something to do with there being the Rocky Mountains
but CA also has mountain ranges (Sierras maybe, possibly more) so hopefully they have good stuff that isn't crazy far

Yeah, we definitely have mountains. For the most part it's a lot of "high desert" so there's terrain but not the same forest that you'll find in other, less arid areas.

If you get a chance, see if you can make it up to northern California - Tahoe, specifically, is beautiful.
