Damm, I guess I'm getting old. What is the big deal with plasti dip over a high quality spray pain such as Rustoleum?

Back in the late 80's I was painting trim, bumpers and wheels with Rustoleum. Now days it's even better. So what am I missing? It appears the plasti dip is like a coating that can rip, tear or scrape off easier than paint, say if your grill rubbed up against a branch while on a trail.

Teach a not so young guy something new please!

Why not haloEFX? Can still be peeled off and looks good, you can wetsand, buff and still acts like real paint job only its peelable.

That's why I'm asking. I'm not familiar with these products.

i like plastidip because it's easily reversible.

nothing worse than spray painting tribal graphics on the hood and not being able to get it off when i sober up.

Plastidip is spray on vinyl, looks nice but scratches easily and doesn't like gas. Nice color choice.
Vinyl is I think is better but is limited on color selection.
HaloEFX has a clear coat that actually acts like clearcoat but the colors are still limited as well.

So you can spray with plasti dip and when you get tired of it you can just peel it off? I have to assume it sticks pretty good because so many members use it on all kinds of stuff.

I took the time to sand my chrome grille, used adhesion promoter and krylon paint, and my grille started to chip after a year. Plasti dip is easier and holds up for about 2 years before it starts to get brittle.
Same with my emblems, not only were they a complete pain to remove and re-apply but the paint chipped vs plastidip which has help up very well. Even when my door was re-painted and the professional body shop painted and re-applied my emblem it's already chipped.

good temp solution to see if it looks good or long term and somewhat easily removable if wanting to return to stock or retain resale value. Also can serve as good protectant.

It peels off very easy. I did my wheels back in 2010. After multiple wheeling trips and getting new tires, I wanted "new" looking wheels so I peeled off the messed up coat and sprayed a new coat on. Looked 100x better.

Pretty much because it's reversible, cheap, and less prep work involved. Mainly reversible for me and my needs. One ~$8 can and a couple hours of my time and I changed the whole front end feel of my car.

Quick and cheap. I've known people to put bloody hand prints on their cars (with Dip) for Halloween. Peel and clean the next week.
I put a Police style rub patch under my drivers window on my old car, and did a winter bra every year. Paint looked pristine when I sold her off.

Cheap and reversible if it looks crappy after a while.

I'm in a similar position as you, go buy a can and shoot some metal pieces you have laying around to get an idea. Prep is a lot less. It stays on kinda of like shrink wrap, sorta, but it does peel of with minimal effort.

I shot some trim pieces on a motorcycle but the screws to put the pieces back on caused the dip to "pull" and bubble slightly thus ending in tears and looked like crap. I pulled them off, removed it in seconds, and then had those pieces cerekoted to match the exhaust I had done.

I'm not a fan but a lot of people have had good results and at a minimum it gives you an idea if you like the look before you invest in the prep or expense for a quality paint application.

That's a pretty cool idea with the hand prints. I'm totally doing that this year.

Much more durable than spray paint. I put about 6 coats on my grill and it's perfect after long road trips and a wheeling trip. Zero rock chips. Even if it does chip you can just shoot another coat in that area without doing any prep aside from cleaning the area.

It'll never be as glossy as a good paint job of course and it is heavier, but for things like grills or trim pieces it's the way to go.

    Like, so many.
It's easy to apply and super easy to reverse. I did my grille, badges, and wheels (until I went aftermarket).
