Why isn't the cabin width wider?

Increase cabin width does not affect garage space, because Toyota has already increased the width via the wheel well. What was the point of that?

I don't know the answer but here are some of my guesses.

    1. Because the new Tacoma is wider, it will be able to be lifted higher while keeping it balance. The Current Gen Tacoma sit 5 inches lower than a full-size half ton truck. Not sure if increase wheelbase affects balance and stability as well?
    2. Because the wheel well protrudes outward more than the body of the vehicle, does this mean that the body would be fully protected from dent without needing a rock slider?
    3. When it comes to off-roading, negative wheel offset is what you want. Jeeps are the most capable off-road vehicle and all of them have negative wheel offset. Not to mention, it looks cool as heck! Now the new Tacoma does not have negative wheel offset, it just looks like it has with the wider wheel well/arch/fender.

    Thoughts?

This so specifically discussed in the reveal video. Wider cabins do encroach on garage space because door room is more impactful than track width.

and because it’s a midsize truck not a full size

Did Sheldon ever explain why he made the truck wider as a whole?

Why does it matter? That’s the question you need to be asking yourself. The new truck is the way it is. You can buy one or not buy one.

It’s a mid-size truck, a compromise vehicle that doesn’t nothing well, albeit the 4G will be little better at “doing nothing well” of the out going generation. It will tow/haul better, ride better, have more power, but at the end of the day it is still a mid-size truck.

No matter what Toyota does some people are going to bitch. You either compromise or you need to build your own vehicle from the ground up to your own specs. There are people out there that do that very thing.

No vehicle out there today is going to fit everyone’s needs and desires. Unless you’re independently wealthy, and those people usually have a fleet of different vehicles because they are never satisfied.

The truck width at the doors is the same as the 3rd Gens as I understand it. The only wider point is at the extended wheel wells.
