Well that's what I thought, but someone a few posts back mentioned a properly maintained AGM, I thought maybe I had missed something.

$400 for a battery! Yikes. I would get lead and change it out every 5 years. Even with the extended life of the AGM you’re still paying half as much.

(Sound of Jerry Bear digging up a dead thread from over a year ago.) Watch out for flying dirt (electrons? bytes?)

Over the weekend, I ordered an X2Power Premium AGM Group 27F battery from Batteries Plus for pickup in store. I knew from their website they didn't have one it stock at that store. I was willing to wait. That was the first time I've tried to buy from them. I was not impressed.

First thing Monday morning, the store canceled the order because they didn't have one in stock. After they canceled, they left me a voice mail saying they could order one and have it in ten days. I wish I had so much business that I could just piss away a $342 order.

24F is the standard size for 2nd gen. 27F is the upgrade size (uses a bigger battery tray). In my truck, a 74431-0C020 27F battery tray was a drop-in replacement for my stock 74431-52040 24F tray and I didn't have to replace any other parts.

Today in Mesquite, Texas, comparing AutoZone Gold and Platinum flooded batteries, AutoZone AGM batteries, and Batteries Plus X2 Power Premium AGM batteries, assuming they would last the length of the warranty:
    Batteries Plus X2 24F: $296.99 price, 5 yr warranty, $59.40/yr
    AutoZone Gold 24F or 27F: $199.99 price, 3 yr warranty, $66.66/yr
    Batteries Plus X2 27F: $341.99 price, 5 yr warranty, $68.40/yr
    AutoZone Platinum EFB 24F or 27F: $219.99 price, 3 yr warranty, $73.33/yr

The Batteries Plus costs include the 10% discount off list price from their website. The AutoZone costs are full list price because I didn't see a way to discount them.

I didn't list results for any of the AutoZone AGM batteries because they all had higher per year costs than the top six above.

I didn't look at less expensive AutoZone or Batteries Plus batteries. Cheaper batteries might have a lower calculated cost per year, but I wanted a top-of-the-line battery.

The 24F size Batteries Plus X2 AGM is least expensive per year for either battery size. That battery has the highest performance of all the 24F size I examined.

For the larger (and higher capacity) 27F size, AutoZone Gold is least expensive per year, but for less than $2/year extra, one can get all the advantages of AGM from a Batteries Plus X2, including two more years of warranty and the best performance of all the 27F batteries I examined.

The Advance Auto AGMs, now DieHard branded, work fine and last a long time. Mine is going on 8 years. Going for ~$200 currently, IIRC. Those ~ $400 AGM batteries?? LOL... those must use Absorbed Gold Mats instead of Glass.

The DieHard AGMs are good quality batteries manufactured by East Penn but they don't make a 27F size/format, only the smaller 24F. No doubt they will be sufficient to replace a 27F non-AGM for most Tacoma drivers and a cost effective option.

So why do people go with the more expensive offerings? Answer: not everyone uses their truck the same way.

DieHard 24F has 120 minute reserve and total capacity of 70Ah.
X2Power 27F (aka Northstar, aka Odyssey Extreme) has 195 minute reserve and total capacity of 92Ah.
Depending on your electrical loads that can make a big difference, especially if we are talking off-grid.

Wednesday this week June 8th my 7 year old OEM dies. What a fiasco getting just a regular 27F battery. Walmart was a big JOKE " I have 4 on the shelf right now!" get there and he said I thought you said 24F????? Finally got one from Interstate batteries, but came from another store. $189 plus tax and no free install, lucky I brought my 10 mm ratcheting end wrench with me!! The Batteries Plus had one in stock I found out later but according to what I find on here the Interstate is good.

    Same here.

My battery is acting up, both Auto Zone and O'Riellys test says bad. It's about 5 years old. Interstate 27f from Costco. Decided to get an AGM from them for a good price $189. Confirmed at Costco web site, which BTW, also state they won't check stock over the phone. Drive down there and they say they don't have one and look it up to tell me it's been discontinued... but they do have the 24f. Come home and the AGM 27f is no longer listed on Interstate's web site, I guess someone forgot to pull it off the Costco/Interstate web page. :annoyed:

I hear the DieHard AGM is good, do some looking around and they have AGM in 24f but not 27f.

Looked at Northstar/ Odyssey and while they show a AGM in 27f, can't find one in stock. Not that I really want to spend $450+ for one either.

I do enough off roading and vehicle camping I want the extra capacity of the 27f but I might just get the 24f because this wondering when my battery will completely fail sucks.

I also know I'll need to bump my Taco's alt charge from it's current mid 13v to just over 14v to completely charge the AGM and I got that figured out.

Did you look at Batteries Plus X2 Power? It’s the same battery, they usually have them in stock and often a coupon code for buy online, pickup in store.

Anybody wondering why AGMs are worth it... no maintenance if you drive the truck frequently, and long lifespan. If you own a garage queen, get a NOCO battery maintainer and keep it hooked up and set for the battery type.

Offroad... the big benefit is no acid water splashing out in the engine bay when you rally or run steep inclines. A little bit of acid goes a long way to corrode the fender steel under the battery tray. That was the main selling point for me, much needed. I bought on a Tacoworld group buy, larger size than stock (27F vs stock 24F), plus a larger battery tray to fit under it. And a NOCO, though I've only used it 4 or 5 times in the past 4 years.

IDK if the voltage regulator mod is really necessary on my 2017 TRD OR. OBD says 13.7 for the past 4 years, which I assume is fine, since the battery is still working.

    Soooo.

I went the Batteries Plus route because I decided I needed the 27f and wanted an AGM and the X2 is deep cycle which is nice.

I don't like the price, which came to about $400 but I also spent about a week "researching" and getting very tired of going out to start my truck wondering if the battery would crap out.

Couple of things, I mentioned the battery was $450, I was looking at the 27, the 27f is $380-$390. You get a 10% discount if you order online, but there is a limit of $30. Battery core charge is $22 which you pay online and they refund when you exchange. Taxes, fees, and it was right at $402 OTD.

If you are considering an AGM you should read through this thread and consider the suggested voltage boost:

I have had good luck with 27f duragold batteries,5 year warranty,3 years free replacement for $160,all of them have lasted at least 4 years or more in the 115 hot Las Vegas summers.
