This has happened since I bought my truck, 96 4x4 ext cab 5speed with aal in rear and 1" spacer in front, whenever I burn out or even get sideways from a stop sign in the rain, my rear of my truck starts shaking like it's hopping off the ground! It's not my tires as they are brand new, my friend told me to take out my overload from my AAL and that may help, any other advice? Thanks in advance!

Too many trucks and mods to list.. check builds
Probably a combination of no weight over the back and axle wrap. mine has never really hopped, but my suspension is far from stock...

What can I do to make it go away or at least make it not as severe?

Axle hop and that's a good way to grenade the rear axle . you keep doing that you'll either strip the teeth off the ring gear , snap a pinion gear or snap an axle

Burnouts and aggressive starts put stress on all drivetrain components, especially the differential. No one is saying it's gonna blow up immediately, lord knows I beat the hell out of my 99 Prerunner like you seem to be, but it accelerates wear and eventually something may break.

Because this is a Toyota the only real reason for aggressive driving is if one is fleeing a Sea Monster !!

Traditions are hard to get away from

Toytec coilovers. Height adjustable Bilstein's. 265/75/16 MT. TRD wheels. Rebuilt r150f. Marlin clutch kit. All kinds of new parts...
New rear shocks will help alleviate some axle wrap but all leaf spring pickups that are light in the rear end will do that.

You're obviously a young guy as I was decades ago. Stay off the gas when it's raining!:) Other than that you're just experiencing the shit suspension Toyota installs from the factory on Tacoma's. Get at least $2000 saved up and buy a whole new aftermarket suspension. Struts, springs and shocks. The choices are mild to wild depending on how big your bank account is. Your problem is your shocks and springs. I went with OME but there are other far higher quality shocks out there. This forum has a huge amount of info on the subject.

My Taco still "hops" a bit when driving over washboard but it's not near as dangerous as it was with the stock suspension at 150,000 miles. The "hop" is caused by the shocks not keeping the wheels planted on the ground and axle wrap and only a very sophisticated shock and spring set up will keep the tires glued to the ground almost 100% of the time. This is where King Shocks and other very expensive shocks such as ICON's and many others come into play. The OME Nitrochargers are too stiff for the weight I carry and I knew that before I bought them. I'm still happy with my OME shocks, struts and Deaver J59 rear springs because I don't "push" the limits. The Deaver J59's are fantastic in my opinion. With Kings these Deavers would be pure heaven. But I don't "need" Kings or ICON's or any other superior brand of shock. But yes, it would be nice.

The reason I didn't spend the $2500 on Kings, ICON's or another very high quality brand that can be custom tuned for my use is simple. They all have exposed shafts and where I live the sandblasting for at least 6 months out of the year would require me to be pulling off my suspension at least twice a year for a re-sealing and/or rebuild. I got under there and looked at the OME's after just one winter and they were "sandblasted" beyond belief. It looked like they'd been on there for 10 years! I don't have the time nor do I want the hassle of that for a superior ride. My Taco is my only ride for the time being. With OME I bolted it on and never looked back.

It's a shame that King and ICON as well as others haven't figured out that if they built a sealed shock the way OME does with the shaft totally sealed they could sell many more to the general public. Where I live? Heat is NOT a problem and never will be. Even in the summer. Not for "normal" daily driving and even "normal" off road driving. ICON does have a cover to block the dirt from their open shafts but I highly doubt it would really work where I live and at the cost of ICON's I wasn't about to take the chance.

For my daily driving as well as Off Road. Yep, I still get the hop on washboard but it is very minimal and it's because the Nitrochargers are designed to carry a lot of weight and I don't. I've got about 500lbs back there for winter right now in a regular cab and it still hops a bit on washboard.

I will say this. I do most of my driving at high speeds on rough pavement and the Nitrochargers are fantastic. I haven't hit a bridge-bump since I installed them that caused me to "jump around" like the dangerous stock springs and suspension did all the time. I also haven't gotten sideways (yep, even at 10mph) on washboard since I installed my Deavers, OME front struts, 880 springs with Nitro's up front and OME Nitro's on the rear.

You need a suspension that works for your driving style and whatever load you will be carrying. That takes research and on this forum many have already done it for you. You just have to save up your cash and start reading. Then decide.

I actually got a very slight amount of "hop" tonight on the snowy roads here but only because i accelerated to fast. I only wish the very high quality shock manufacturers like King, ICON and others would wake up to the fact that there are millions of us out here who aren't worried about heat and need a completely sealed shaft on our shocks to keep out the sand and salt.

Alright I will for sure be replacing my suspension, I have a pair of adjustable bilstein struts for the front I just need some springs, and I will probably go with deavers in the rear and either king or icon shocks if I can get a good deal

I hop literally whenever the tires break traction, it's ridiculous at times, so if I can get it just not as severe I'll be happy.

Your truck is trying to commit suicide! It wants you to be nicer and stop what you are doing in the rain.

Seriously, it is a pickup, suspension and design is made for hauling cargo and not to be driven empty. If you are just driving a truck empty, then add WEIGHT to the bed, over the axle. Your engine is heavy and you and the cab are also forward of the drive axle. These trucks, if always driven empty, really need to be front wheel drive!
