    Found out something interesting. The Hyundai Santa Cruz has more payload than my Tacoma?!? This is per the sticker on the door jamb. My V6 4WD SR Double cab has a payload of 990 LBS. What gives? Tacoma appears to be the more rugged vehicle with body-on-frame construction and stronger axles. Is Toyota just being conservative or maybe the Santa Cruz can haul more because it is lighter overall. Either way it still doesn't make sense.

    Toyota has the best selling midsize in the states, why would they bother spending any money on it? Toyota is fine it’s that until it starts lagging in sales.

    I like my Tacoma but I'm glad the competition is heating up. "As iron sharpens iron so does one man sharpen another." It's pathetic that the Tacoma would let something like a Santa Cruz have better payload than them. Have you ever seen one? Reminds me of a Subaru Brat.

    Short answer is, because that’s what the manufacturer says not to exceed.

    Long answer kept short.
    Safety and LIABILITY.

    it has to do with loaded vehicle weight
    Santa Cruz is a lighter weight vehicle and with that much payload, it still drives, corners, stops within reason

    Tacoma is heavy to begin with, so adding too much weight, you won't get satisfactory cornering and stopping performance, hence the manufacturer doesn't post higher payload rating

    I was under the impression payload capacity is based on occupancy. 250 lbs per human, or something like that. Why SUVs with 3rd row seats generally have more payload than trucks. That said, a Hilux has double the payload of a Tacoma.

    In theory you can put more stuff in the Santa Cruz then in the Tacoma. The total weight of all the occupants and payload in my Tacoma cannot exceed 990 lb. That would also include tongue weight of any trailer. I know the Tacoma can handle more payload than the Santa Cruz is just annoying that Toyota won't make that official so you can legally do it

    How do you know your Tacoma can handle more payload then a Santa Cruz? I think the only way to settle this is for you to buy one and do some testing whistlinDiesel style.

    Toyota will always play it safe. Legally do it? I do not see them pulling you over and making you load on scales.

    Can it handle it, yes. Ive had 2k in the bed but only for 30 miles. Its just a number but also they want a larger number to make it look appealing and better than the competition. Would you want the cruz just because a sticker?

    Also that sticker you posted is not for a Santa Cruz, That is a Ford Maverick sticker and payload shown.

    I think it may have to do with tire load. If the tires are only rated to a certain amount of load that includes cargo, passengers and vehicle weight. The Hyundai starts out very light. So you can increase the the payload.

    So.....following that logic a Silverado would have an even lighter payload capacity because it starts out heavier?

    My bad! I uploaded the wrong photo but here is the article I got the information from:

    https://jalopnik-com.cdn.ampproject.org/v/s/jalopnik.com/what-is-the-real-payload-of-the-2022-hyundai-santa-cruz-1847519398/amp?amp_gsa=1&amp_js_v=a9&usqp=mq331AQKKAFQArABIIACAw==#amp_tf=From %1$s&aoh=16580595254985&csi=1&referrer=

    But that is another good point......why does the Maverick have more payload than the Tacoma? Toyota should do better.
