The stock speakers themselves are garbage. When I replaced mine, I found that the speakers are basically paper. I replaced with a Rockford Fosgate Punch series setup. Amp, tweeters, 4 door speakers, and 8” powered sub. First mod I did to my truck. Sound quality improves exponentially. It is a luxury but for some of us there ain’t no life without music

I had a 2011 BMW 328 and the sound system was in another universe from my 2019 Limited Taco.

My '99 Grand Prix GT had the factory Bose system in it. It is the audio quality I've compared all my vehicles since to but none have come close.

I did find that my go-to radio station is broadcast as a sub of another station in HD. The sound quality is a lot better.

My dad has a Alpina b7 (BMW 7 series) with the bang & olufsen sound system. Holy crap that sounds amazing.

I feel like there are 2 categories for OEM car audio... trash and amazing. Even the "upgraded" systems on most cars sound like trash, its only when you get into the really high end that systems are designed by a audio engineer and not some cost analyst at their desk.

Do either of you have any simple instructions on install for the kicker key?

Definitely. It was "OK" as the base kit (really needed a high quality source to sound great), but with the dual sub upgrade, it is fantastic. It even makes XM sound good somehow...

Chances are, that craptastic boombox from Kmart was a JBL.

Today's speakers use neodymium magnets, they don't need to be huge to handle high power. I remember back in the day when the huge magnets were the rage then neodymium came on the scene and changed everything...rare earth...

I am also very interested in this! Does it make it so you can actually get some sound out if the rear speakers with factory head unit? Thanks!

Yeah ok. Is that why subwoofers that handle crazy amounts of power have huge magnets? If a speaker was built to be efficient then yeah the magnet wouldn’t have to be big at all but at the same time probably wouldn’t be rated to handle a lot of power.

i agree but im 600 short of that and i also added sound deadening . Just saying you can piece it together yourself for less money and my Head unit is more capable. This is a good option for people wanting to stay with a stock headunit but it doesnt make sense to keep those imo

Unless you’re buying a truck equipped with a premium audio system, I tend to consider trucks as having less thrilling audio systems.

They are different types of magnets, but you aren't wrong that the stock Tacoma speakers 100% are terrible. My 2020 Tacoma non JBL speakers are laughable. Most nice speakers that I'm familiar with still don't use the neodymium magnets, old and new.

You should have heard the AM receiver with CRAIG cassette player I installed in my FJ-40 back in 1970.
It was that, or road noise.
My '16 Tacoma sounds great to me.
