It's just that the studs are large enough to carry the expected load distributed between the number of studs. Either configuration works fine for this type of application. They could design for 5 or 6, and they picked 6 for the Tacoma and 5 for the Tundra. My F150 also had 5.

The guys who think the drum brakes are awesome and not antiquated should 'weigh' in on this. One of their arguments is that drums were used because they were heavier...one extra lug and wheel nut probably help with a little more weight according to them.

ferrari has one lug like F1 does.
Its because they are made to be road going racecars. So they want quick pit stops, just want to include what they learn on the track in their cars.

Ferrari isn't the first and only to do it as well. Porsche has done it in older models, I think the GT3 RS has an option for single bolt.

To be fair OZ, BBS, Eneiki, Werks, Volk and I'm sure plenty of other performance single forged brands make single bolt rims.
All come with a very pretty price tag. Which if you can afford a $700k car, I'm sure isn't a problem to you.

On the note of tundras, from what I've heard talking to used dealers etc, the Tundra is one of the few toyotas that do not hold their value like the taco does. Hell one guy I work with that used to be in the used car business told me he woulnd't even take a tundra for a trade because they are worth nothing used.

Never actually looked at them in the market so could be bullshit. But wouldn't really be surprised, when it comes to full sized tundra would definitely not be my first choice.

The Land Cruiser switched to the heavier duty 5x150 M14x1.5 bolt pattern in late-97/98, the Tundra started usibg it when the truck got larger and heavier for 2007. The smaller/lighter duty vehicles like the 4Runner/Tacoma/Hilux/Prado kept using the lighter duty 6x139.7 M12x1.5 bolt pattern, as it wasn't required.

The lug nuts on the 5x150 bolt pattern can be torqued significantly higher than the 6x139.7. Plus the larger diameter provides more lateral load capacity.

tl;dr: They're different trucks with different loads.

Did the gen-1 Tundra have 6 lug? I've seen countless older ones with our Gen-2 "Sport" rim on them.

Yes, the Tundra used 6x139.7 until 2006, it switched to 5x150 in 2007. Sequoia switched one year later.
