Why do they make TRD OR’s in RWD?

Probably a dumb question, but what do I live for if not to prove my ignorance...

So I’ve figured out, while trolling dealer inventories, that the TRD OR comes in two and four wheel drive. I have not figured out why anyone would want an off road truck with two wheel drive.

The only thing I can think of is maybe the locking rear diff.

It's all about marketing. Badging a 2wd truck "Off Road" is marketing.

I had assumed desert style racing trucks maybe preferred lighter trucks for speed?

    :duh:

There are plenty of people who buy 4X4's and never use them so who are the real "posers"?

It's just another trim level to me. Had 4x4 trucks my whole life and don't need one for a daily so why not a OR 2wd. Rides good and has cool features.

My buddy has a second gen 2wd Offroad..... He though his locker was 4wd.
That was a funny one when he got stuck and we all noticed his front tires weren't spinning.

My old Tundra is 2WD with “TRD off-road package”. Never bought it for off-road use, and it’s never been off-road in 160k miles, but I Specifically wanted that back in 2001 as the bilstein shocks on the OR package were way better that what was on the stock Tundra. for the $500 extra back then it was way worth it, also got better tires and some bed stickers.....:)

There are plenty of off-road places to go that have absolutely no need For 4WD, that’s probably why people are buying them. But could also be for similar reasons to why I bought a OR 2WD Tundra.

Be sure to go let all the Score racers know that 2WD with a locker is for posers or marketing only

Have you seen the rocks in the Costco parking lot? Lots of flexing happening there.

I had a first gen Prerunner.

I ride off road motorcycles & have ran the Baja course, post race quite a few times.
I love how trophy trucks look, wide with the squat.
I lived in the flat part of TN where is rarely snows.
Toyota's 2 wheel drive trucks are car-like low.
I need a truck, but hardly ever use 4X4
If I want to go off-road I go on a motorcycle.
It wasn't a money saving issue, I could have bought anything I wanted, but I thought it was cool to have a 2WD truck that was as tall as a regular pickup. (I came out of a 2WD 3/4 ton Chevy into the Gen 1)

    I replaced the Gen 1 with a 3/4 ton Chevy 4X4 Duramax.
I moved to where there can be some snow.
    Still do not go off-road.
When it snows I prefer a lightweight front wheel drive car.
I probably use four wheel drive once a year.
Bought a 4X4 Tacoma earlier this fall.
I won't really use the 4X4 on it either, but it is nice to have if you need it, 4X4 increases resales value too.

    There is some insight.

I work in product development. It is a nightmare collectively analyzing what drives consumers. I have decided it is impossible to really understand what motivates people, but you have to remember that Toyota is trying to make vehicles with mass appeal for a country with a wildly varying landscape and temperature range. Even though it is part of my job, I don't worry about other people's choices much, because I don't live their life.

Purpose built long travel truck with over 800 HP vs. street truck with Camry engine.

    I bought a TRD OR 2WD for the package/suspension/locker. I don’t need 4WD and it was an extra 3-4K$
