They are torx drive but their advantage is the R4 and RSS screws are structural

I'll keep that in mind next time I'm running a 3/8" x 16" GRK RSS screw into old growth douglas fir without predrilling a hole

The best sheet metal screws are Robertson. Wood working, cabinet building use Robertson. They work the best in these situations. Giant lag bolts or other bridge building, skyscraper building fasteners are probably best as regular hex type bolts or rivets! Torx bits strip, that is why they put a dozen or more of them in the bit kits. One Robertson will outlast many hundreds of Torx. The real Robertson will not strip even at an angle where Torx isn't even a consideration. In the states you guys get some lame squarish chinese knockoff of a Robertson. Robertson aren't used/sold there so you really can't form an opinion. :crapstorm:

Basically Torx wins in long term durability. This is because of the wider contact patch that torx has and that robertson is tapered causing it to cam out once worn. You can read more here: https://pedriana.wordpress.com/2021/02/03/robertson-vs-torx-screw-drives-fight/

Now that the Torx patent has ended, they give us Torx-Plus. I've never used them but All the complaints I hear about torx are seem to have been fixed.

they put low quality bits in the box. At best, they are sintered steel. I've bought some screws that came with aluminum bits. The sintered ones never wear out on me, they just chip and crack.

I thought about this thread when I was picking up hardware for a cabinet build. The specs called for M4x16 panhead bolts, because fuck our freedom inducing 8-32 x 5/8's. That would be too easy.

So off to Ace I go, and I found what I needed in a nice looking hex head. $0.85 per. In the next drawer was the same bolt in Phillips, at $0.12 per.

So when I bought a box of 100, guess which box I bought? Ol' ugly x-slots. :bananadead:

One of my guilty pleasure is having the right fasteners. I buy them off McMaster for almost every size of 316 socket head for m3, m4, m5, and m6

Slotted screws are good for historical restoration or scrape metal.

The slotted screw was invented in the 1st century and used for literally centuries until a Canadian guy tried to use one, and, while befuddled by it having no concept of its designed usage, he cut his hand. He made a square drive screw, and as he was very full of himself, he named it after himself. Then sold Henry Ford on them. Shortly after, a guy realized they are weak sauce, and he made a stronger screw, and called it Phillip, named after the great Lord Phillip, Husband of QE 2. OZ-T, a young lad in his 20's at the time, was bothered, and felt his fellow Canadian was "screwed", began his journey to slander ALL screws except the beloved square drive.

Some of these facts may or may not have been accurately researched before posting.

    Let’s keep it rolling!

OP is definitely not a tuner!

Holley 390 was me fave 4 stroke carb, and now a days it’s Husqvarna’s WG for the 3120, by far me fave 2 stroke carb to tune.

I always carry a small red slotted one meself. Always looking to help a brother in need of a tune. No 2 stroke smoke unless you’re buzzing a competition saw or burning Alky!
