Why did you choose Prerunner (or 2WD) over 4x4?

Getting back to my PreRunner in a local parking lot a guy is looking at my truck. His Tacoma is parked a couple spots up. He's looking at this and that, making a few comments, a few comparsions.

He's showing me a few things on his and said he had no need for 4WD ... ergo his reasoning for his PreRunner.

So as he's talking I look down and see 4 X 4 mudflaps .... apparently my body language said "WTH?"

He noticed and quickly said he had errands to run ... funny shit.

Honestly, I went with the prerunner because that'a what they had on the used lot and it was what I could afford. I couldn't afford to jump up another 8-9k to move over to the new lot and get a 4wd. I don't really need it. I've got decent tires, nothing super fancy but have had no trouble with them in snow and average trails in the mountains. With that said, we are making more and more trips to the mountains and exploring more so the next one will most likely be 4wd when this one gets paid off. I'll have a better trade in for a better down payment next time around.

Here in Hawaii the PreRunners retain more value than the 4X counterparts.

PreRunners aren't "used" as much as a 4x4 so it would seem they depreciate at a slower rate. Given that there are very few Tacoma's being used for off-roading compared to mall crawling the simple law of suppy vs demand also comes into play on resale values here.

My local market seems to think tacomas are gold. I searched high and low, then found a 06 trd o/r DC 4x4 for the same price as an 04 DC and jumped on it. Been happy ever since. There's something about the 2nd gens. More stylish and aesthetic. Living in the PNW, 4x4 gets you there and back. Hunting, fishing, group meets etc.....

Mostly self-regulation. I've had Jeep's and a FJ that were fully setup for off roading and I nearly killed both of them. This was in my 20's. If I have a 4x4 I can't help trying just about anything in it. The Prerunner keeps me from doing stupid stuff basically. I'll get off pavement for camping stuff, but nothing extreme at all.

I downsized from a large truck that rode better because I feel more at home in the off road feel. I just don't want to actually go "mudding" anymore.

Main reason for 2wd: Because RINZLER!

Found my 08 2wd Tacoma at a local dealership, got em down to $26k, then applied the 5k trade in value from my civic. Ended up walking out of there with 30k miles and all the good Pre-owned Toyota warranties. Was leased before, and clearly never taken off road.

Main reason for 2wd: Save Gas / Less Moving Parts To Fix / Less Weight / Dont Need It In The Big City

I have had multiple 4x4s in the past, and only used the 4wd a few times. Now if we move to Asheville like we plan on doing, there will be a busted ass janky 4x4 in the driveway while my Taco sleeps in the winter time :D

Main reason for 2wd: Less parts maintenance, better gas mileage (20.1 avg), lower initial cost, can off road with locking rear diff to places I want, never snows here (except on top of Mauna Kea/Mauna Loa). In fact bought this truck specifically to move to Hawai'i.

Cheaper, better mpg, don't need 4wd. I get a car allowance for work and I wanted to keep my truck payment right at my allowance. In order to get 4wd I would have had to buy an older truck with much higher mileage. I do hunt but no where that's too tough to get to...haven't been stuck yet.

Main reason for 2wd: Have had about 30 4X4s over the years - used to fix up old Jeeps and sell them. Frankly, 90% of mild to medium off-roading is tire selection and good, technical driving and spotting. Once I need a serious off-roader, I'll trade her in and get a 4X4. For now, I'll enjoy the better MPGs, less moving parts, and a great truck. Also, got her for about $23.5k brand spankin' new.

I just needed a truck. I was in the market for a pre-owned Tacoma and would have gone either way (4x2 or 4x4) for the right deal. As it turned out the best deal I found was for an immaculate 2014 DCSB 4x2 with 21K miles. I do have the rear locker if I want to get a little adventurous. I don't do any off-roading, no snow where I live, and mainly need the truck for the utility it offers. I am very happy with my Pre-runner.

I bought her because my car was dying, needed a truck to get to better trails for mountain biking and hauling bikes and people for shuttle runs, and I couldn't afford a 2nd gen 4x4 with reasonable miles for less than $10k. Also the 2WD prevents me from heavily modding it in leu of a 4x4 in the future.

Well, I would imagine that for *EVERYONE*, it boils down to an ecomomy vs necessity consideration. You pay extra FOR 4wd, if you NEED 4wd. If you do NOT need 4wd, you don't waste money on it.
