Why did they use a pin to secure the brake fluid reservoir to master cylinder?

I had to replace a leaky brake fluid reservoir and I was disappointed that it is secured to the master cylinder with just a simple pin. It is not even a solid metal pin but a rolled up piece of thin sheet metal. It was a major P.I.A. to punch out as I had to use a pin/punch and a hammer and there wasn't enough room for swinging.

I think this is an awful design. Why didn't they secure it with a simple long screw? That would be much simpler to take apart and put back in.

 

Most likely it is cheaper than a screw and cheaper to manufacture

 

sure but the user friendliness sucks. i am surprised Toyota would compromise overall user experience over a few pennies cost.

 

Clearly you haven't been paying attention to the auto industry...

 

Want to know the real reason?

A master cylinder is not a serviceable part. Your supposed to replace the whole unit. That pin is never mean to be easy to remove its supposed to hold it permanantly. Did you buy the reservoir online as a single piece?

I just bought the reservoir, the plastic part. i took the gaskets from the old reservoir and put them on the new one.

 

I mean it should be fine. But they want your money for the whole thing.

 

pins and nails have been used for many years on every automobile manufacturer I am aware of .

 

So you reused the gaskets and are complaining about a roll pin? Chances are pretty high you'll get to do it all over again. They use a roll pin because it's simple and it works.
