Why aren’t headers a thing for 3rd Gens?

I’ve been considering potential performance mods for my 3.5L 3rd gen and I started to realize that headers are completely unavailable (so far in my search) for my config. Doug Thorley seems to make a set for the four-cylinder, but the 3.5 V6 does not have an option available anywhere.

I’m sure there’s a reason for it, I just haven’t come across the explanation and I’m curious.

The engine doesn’t have headers bro. Take a look at your engine before you post next time

Yep, no headers on the 3.5s. Just a single tube off of each head.

The engine has a unique head that allows the downpipe to mount directly… Not exactly something that would be immediately obvious, but thanks for the help anyway sweetheart

I've learned that TacomaWorld users can be very unforgiving, especially if you're a new Tacoma owner. You get used to the sarcasm and satire as you go on asking questions on here lol.

Some folks do seem to have a poor grasp of conversational courtesy in a text only format and some folks are just keyboard commandos that would never speak to a stranger in the same manner face to face.

That said, both are far outnumbered by the genuinely helpful, patient and courteous members here.

It's not unique. Other manufactures have gone to this design as well. Really frees up engine bey space on transversely mount V6's.

Very much appreciate the support from everyone. I’m certainly no expert on Tacomas… mistakes will be made. Just enjoying learning and modifying as I go.

Anyone have experience with the Doug Thorley downpipes? Any performance/sound improvement?

    back to your question..

last i saw there are three options at the forward side of the exhaust for performance enhancement. OV had dump tubes with either cat delete or high flow 200cell cats. i have run both, but I'm not sure you can find those anymore. also URD had some catless option here: https://urdusa.com/urd-power-extractor-pipes-2016-tacoma-3-5l-v6/

and i believe AFE has something as well but I'm not sure if the tube design is different from stock or if it's just the cats.

speaking for the OV high flows, they definitely are an enhancement, but my opinion is that for it to show it really must be combined with the right full exhaust system front to back. this small motor is capable of a lot and the exhaust is a key, but you must optimize all of it for these enhancements to add up and show.

The 2GR-FKS motor has the exhaust manifold made into the cylinder head. You can swap those out for performance high flow pipes or pre delete cat pipe.

I can't see why you'd want to delete the cats on our trucks. Possibly a small HP gain but the smell/noise isn't worth it to me. Maybe I'm getting old though and this is my DD so I have a different view.
