The shifter was easy, you put it in the socket the old one was in and rotate, it locks into position.

Now I have a question, I thought the type 74s were used for the climate controls. That looks like a no go.
The red ones are the oem. The 74 is the LED. I dont see how it can work.

    74LED and CC bulbs.jpg

Am I supposed to take apart the bulb base with that micro retaining clip the put the LED in?
    I think I need a socketed LED.

That's weird... I ordered 74's and they looked just like the OEM ones but white.

The 96-00 where the 74's for the climate control. 01-04 are neo 3 or 4 I believe. It's talked about in this thread somewhere

Thanks for the prompt responses guys.

I have 3 spare 74s, but I knew there was an ashtray bulb .. 74?
Good to know the glove is a 74, I'll look at that soon.

OK, so to summarize, and check so I dont have to order again.

    Previous Order:

    5 WLED-GHP5: Green 5.95 (dash)
    2 3022-CW4: Cool White 2.84 (ceiling)
4 74-GHP3: Green 2.49 (tranny and HVAC (or not quite))

    Now I need 3 of:
NEO4-GHP: NEOx LED Bulb - High Power Instrument Panel LED - 4mm NEO4-xHP Green

Duh, like that doesnt look familiar.

Should that cover it? Or do I need something else for the ashtray?

I was thinking of making all the ceiling lights LED, so if they are the same just get a couple more cool whites???

I am not going after external LEDs yet.

I will reread this entire thread again.
I did attempt originally some paint remover on the amber paint. It did bubble a little, but I was too impatient, scratched through in one spot. I think I will need to hit up some junkyards for the non-amber painted HVAC panel

    A side question.

I think I read of someone that fried something in their HVAC while trying this.

So ... always pull the negative terminal for safety when doing this?

I never fried anything in the HVAC but I had to buy a whole different faceplate from a 02 4Runner because behind the hi/low dial on the HVAC is all orange and no matter what color LED Bulb you get it will still stay orange where a 4Runner has a clear hi/low dial. Also I only had to use 4 dash led's to do the gauge swap. Here is a picture and receipt of the 4Runner HVAC I got just to use the faceplate so it wouldn't be orange. I haven't done the ashtray bulb yet and still have 1 extra blue #74 LED for when I get around to it.

What did the part run you? Was it from a dealer or used internet junk yard?

I am trying a used search...

    used-auto.part.com is pretty good.

So I am checking with a CT junkyard on the condition of an 2002, it came up as $40.00 (which I think is for the whole unit).

Here is my 2003 Tacoma tranny light replacement, as posted in the 2nd gen forum, cause I didnt know this existed.

    1) Swing back armrest, open little door for lower storage, remove 2 bolts.

    2) Loosen 4 screw head bolts (2/side) from sides of AT shroud.

    3) Lift up AT shroud rotate 90 degrees and remove. During this it will be necessary to lift up the front of back panel that goes to the armrest (where the rearmost 2 screws to). Just lift it up 20 degrees to do what you need.

    4) Unscrew the illumination bulb. Hint, its the one with red on the wire underneath. I think it loosens clockwise and tightens counter, you can figure it out, you have the technology.

    5) remove bulb and insert LED. Turn on headlights, if it doesnt light up, remove LED, rotate 180 degrees and reinstall. I had to do that. I was using a shop towel/paper towel the entire time when holding LED to avoid finger oils.

    6) Secure light, and reverse above steps.

For my 1st gen, the LED used was a type 74. I ordered from SuperbrightLEDs and it is listed as
    74-GHP3 Volts 10-16V Viewangle 360.

    _____________________________

So it locks in position, the socket the bulb/LED goes into.
I had to turn one way before I could pull it down, put in the LED, then go up, and turn the other way to lock it back in.
Then do the whole thing again, because polarity was reversed.

This is on a 2003 Taco.

Yeah, I figured, duh, there is your invoice, I'll just try lkqcorp. On there now. Of course it wasnt listed as A/C or HVAC, so I went back to your invoice to see the part description...

Wow. Their South Texas location is down the road from my office/work.
    17 minutes away.

This thread is for 1st Gen tacoma's although someone in here might know, I would bet you may have better luck asking in a 2nd Gen thread. Good luck.
