After being present for several recoveries (broken tierod) that could have quickly been solved with a portable welder I am looking at getting one. Karnage Welder looks like what I would want to go with. Does anyone have one? thoughts?

Would you be willing to take off the inner cover and take pics of the battery. I would love to convert one to LifePo4 for weight reduction.

So THAT has been our problem working on the next generation, lighter, Karnage Welder. There is no lithium batteries that will output 100-120A .030 wire or 120-150A .035 wire continuous in that size of a battery. So far we've found some 15A continuous, 30A peak, but nowhere near what is needed for welding. We currently use a pair of 22AH AGM batteries.

Awesome thanks for that info! I look forward to seeing some upgrades when technology allows.

Or you can save $1000 and do this in the rare instance you need it:

what? You pull a battery out of each rig. You don’t just carry them around incase you need to weld.

I know there are other options out there that use vehicle batteries, but the point of the portable welder is to be portable and not disable 2 vehicles. In the case of the last location I was not going to take my truck up to the one needing recovered. If that was the case and I still wanted to spend $1000+ I would go the Premier Power welder route.

I think @plurpimpin is saying use the truck batteries if really needed.. Keep one truck running to jump all the others if needed and borrow 2-3 batteries from the trucks to do the welding

Understood, not a portable option like I want.

Are you planning on starting a remote recovery business or something dedicated to welding repairs and heavy recoveries?

The idea of a portable welder is cool for sure, just not sure its worth dropping $1k and all the weight and storage space required. Also worth thinking about all the rigs that have dual batteries. No need to even disable a truck, just pull one battery from each dual system and go that route.

    Just my $0.02

Just a simple small form factor suitcase welder, we drive trucks not Jeeps so space isn't a premium. The people that broke said they'd have happily paid $2-300 to get welded back up and continue wheeling. At that return rate it would pay for itself quickly, There's lots of people breaking on the trails that I run.
